Worcester, MA - The Georgetown University football team fell to Holy Cross, 48-6 this afternoon at Fitton Field. The Crusaders (2-0, 1-0) would score all they needed with two touchdowns on their first two possessions, as they cruised past the Hoyas, who fall to 1-1 on the season.
Holy Cross dominated the first half of play, opening up a 28-0 lead. The Crusaders dominated in all aspects, holding a 252-to-21 advantage in yards and 22:26-to-7:34 edge in time of possession. Holy Cross opened the game with two 13-play drives on their first two possessions, topping both off with two-yard runs, by Steve Silva and Gideon Akande. Two passing touchdowns by John O'Neil in the second quarter expanded the lead, a 12-yard pass to Sean Gruber and an 8-yarder to Akanade with only 20 seconds in the half, set the 28-0 halftime deficit for the Hoyas.
The Hoyas couldn't cut into the deficit in the second half, as Holy Cross cruised through the final 30 minutes for the 48-6 final. After a turnover by the Hoyas on their initial second half possession, the Crusaders widened their lead to 35-0 on Akande's third touchdown of the game, a one-yard run to the right side. Early in the fourth quarter, Holy Cross added their sixth touchdown of the game on a touchdown pass to Bob Turkovich by Brian McSharry from eight yards out.
Georgetown finally broke through on the scoreboard with 9:55 remaining in the game. After a 13-play, 86-yard drive, sophomore Emir Davis (Trenton, NJ) reached the end zone from a yard out, however the Hoyas would miss the extra point, for a 42-6 score.
Holy Cross capped off the scoring with 4:34 left on a one-yard touchdown rush by Terrance Gass, but fumbled the extra point, for the 48-6 final.
Senior Marcus Slayton (Cleveland, OH) led the Hoyas on offense with 105 total yards, having carried the ball ten times for 51 and caught a 54 yard pass. Fellow senior Jason Carter (New Brunswick, NJ) had a team-high 9 tackles for the defense.
The Hoyas return to action next Saturday, when they open the new Multi-Sport Field against Brown at 1 p.m. This game marks the first time that an Ivy League school will play on the Hilltop.
