Jan. 7, 2006

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University indoor track & field team began the new year in impressive fashion, posting eight first place finishes at the Father Diamond Invitational on Saturday, held at the Recreation Sports Complex in Fairfax, Va.

On the women's side, the Hoyas finished first in four events and second in another. Freshmen twins Avril and Lise Ogrodnick (Quebec, Canada/Beaconsfield) each won an event, as Avril crossed first in the 1000m run with a BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying time of 2:52.86, while Lise posted a time of 5:01.18 in the mile, qualifying for the BIG EAST, but missing out on the ECAC by four hundredths of a second.

Meanwhile, junior Nana Hanson-Hall (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) won the 500m run with a BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying time of 1:14.55 and was also part of the first place 4x400m relay squad. Hanson-Hall teamed with sophomore Ashley Hubbard (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield), senior Meghan O'Neil (Phoenixville, Pa./Spring-Ford) and junior Kandance Ferguson (East Elmhurst, N.Y./Milton Hershey (Pa.)) for a conference and regional qualifying time of 3:50.52.

Junior Ashley Mondie (Washington, D.C./Milton Hershey) qualified for the BIG EAST and ECAC in the triple jump, placing second at 12.21m (40'1/2").

For the men, freshman Kenny Mitchell (Atlanta, Ga./Westlake), senior Chris Bonner (Weston, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) and sophomore Shane Young (Reston, Va./Herndon) each posted first place showings, while also qualifying for both the BIG EAST and IC4A Championships. Mitchell had his second straight strong performance since joining the track team after the Hoya football season, winning the 60m at 6.89. In the 500m, Bonner crossed in 1:04.17 for the victory, while Young took the 3000m with a time of 8:27.25.

Mitchell and Bonner would join together with seniors Jared Jenkins (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz) and Stanley Lagrenade (Nyack, N.Y./Nyack) to close out the afternoon to win the 4x400 relay. The four would qualify for the BIG EAST Championship with a time of 3:21.81.

The Hoyas return to the track on Friday, January 13 for the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg, Va.
