Georgetown Football Announces New Coaching Staff

Feb. 24, 2006

Washington, D.C. - Georgetown University Head Football Coach Kevin Kelly announced the Hoya coaching staff for the upcoming 2006 season. Kelly was named the program's head coach in January 2006.

"I'm really excited about our staff and we can't wait to get going," Kelly said. "We have a good mix of coaches with some different experience and we are excited to make Georgetown football one of the best in the Patriot League."

Rob Sgarlata, a 1994 Georgetown alum who ranks among the top-10 on the school's career rushing list, returns for his 12th season with the program. Sgarlata will serve as the team's assistant head coach and will work with defensive backs. In addition, Sgarlata will serve as the program's academic coordinator.

Joining the team as the offensive coordinator is Jim Miceli. Miceli comes to the Hilltop from Fordham University, where he was an assistant. At Fordham, Miceli served as the special teams coordinator, recruiting coordinator and linebackers coach. He served as the head coach at Bryant College from 1998-2004, overseeing the offense and tutoring quarterbacks. A 1979 graduate of Southern Connecticut State University, Miceli had coaching stints at Maryland, Pittsburgh and Rowan College. At Maryland (1995-96, 1993-94), Miceli worked on the offensive side, helping with quarterbacks, offensive line, tight ends and inside receivers. He spent two years at Pittsburgh (1992-93), working with the offensive line and handling short yardage situations. During his coaching career, he has tutored at least 20 players who have gone on to play professionally and been a part of six bowl teams.

Dassin Blackwell, a 1998 graduate of Towson University, where he was a defensive back, joins the program as the running backs coach. Blackwell most recently served as a graduate assistant at Hofstra, working with defensive backs. He also spent time at Iona (tight ends, academic coordinator) and Bryant College.

Also on the offensive side will be Brad Dunlay, who will tutor the offensive line. A 1999 graduate of Springfield College, where he earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees, Dunlay joins Georgetown from Maine Maritime Academy, where he was since 2001. While at Maine, Dunlay was the team's assistant head coach and offensive line coach.

Kevin Gilbride, a 2003 graduate of the University of Hawaii, joins the Hoyas as the team's tight ends coach. Gilbride, who will also oversee kickoff coverage and film exchange, comes to the Hilltop from Syracuse University, where he was an offensive graduate assistant and the assistant tight ends coach.

The final member of the staff on the offensive side is KiJuan Ware, who will work with the wide receivers. Ware comes to Georgetown from Dartmouth College, where he worked with the receivers and special teams.

Kelly, who will oversee the defense with Sgarlata, added three assistants to that side of the ball.

Carlton Hall, a 1998 graduate of Vanderbilt University, will handle the defensive line. He comes to Georgetown from Columbia University, where he spent three years working with wide receivers, the defensive line and linebackers. Hall also has professional experience, serving a fellowship with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2004.

James Vallano will serve as a defensive and special teams assistant. A 2003 graduate of Catholic University, Vallano was a four-year letterwinner and was named the team's Offensive Back of the Year as a senior. Following his graduation, he coached at the United States Naval Academy for a year, working with the sprint football team, and spent last year with Annapolis High School in Maryland.

Luke Thompson, a 1998 graduate of Assumption College, joins the team as the linebackers coach and special teams coordinator. Thompson comes to the Hilltop from Harvard University, where he spent two years. At Harvard, Thompson coached the outside linebackers and helped lead the 2004 team to a 10-0 record and the Ivy League title. He also has coached at Amherst College, Holy Cross and Bowdoin College.
