Washington, D.C. - Georgetown University Head Football Coach Kevin Kelly and the Hoya football team will wrap up its spring practice schedule with an intra-squad game on Saturday afternoon at the Multi-Sport Field. The team will begin its Spring Game at approximately 1 p.m. The Hoyas will split into two squads, one under the direction of Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator Jim Miceli, and the other under the direction of Assistant Head Coach Rob Sgarlata.
"I'm excited for Saturday, but the whole spring has been a great experience," Kelly said. "We've been working hard for the last three weeks during official practices, but the entire coaching staff and all of our players have been putting great effort in since we came on board. I hope that a lot of our fans can come out and see us on Saturday."
It's been a whirlwind three months for Kelly, who completed his full coaching staff in late February, and had three weeks to prepare for spring practice. The 10-man coaching staff - Kelly included - worked long hours studying film of the Hoya players to get to know them, and of opponents from the Patriot League as they began preparations for the 2006 season.
"We've worked really hard, and we've worked a lot of hours," Kelly said. "It's not anything that we didn't expect. With a new staff, we had to get to know each other and we had to get to know our players. It's been a great process and I think we're all really pleased with how things have gone.
"I've got a great staff here and I'm excited to work with them. What makes any program great are the kids that you have playing for you, and I think that Georgetown is fortunate to have some tremendous young men on its roster."
This will be the third and final scrimmage for the Hoyas, who previously held intra-squad scrimmages on March 25 and April 1. Four different quarterbacks saw action in the second scrimmage, including freshman Ben Hostetler (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill), who has completed three passes for 57 yards. Junior David Fajgenbaum (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft) completed a pair of passes for 15 yards; sophomore Matt Bassuener (Port Edwards, Wisc./John Edwards-Western Reserve Academy) completed three passes for 22 yards; and freshman Brad Hartung (Wyckoff, N.J./Bergen Catholic) completed 5-of-7 passes for 29 yards.
The rushing attack was led by sophomore Brad Moss (Warwick, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep [N.J.]), who carried nine times for 70 yards and a touchdown in the second scrimmage, and freshman Adrian Ashford (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River), who carried the ball eight times for 19 yards and one score. Sophomore Kyle Van Fleet (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) led the receiving corps with two catches for 32 yards, while sophomore Jasper Ihezie (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) added two catches for 21 yards. Sophomore Brent Craft (Jupiter, Fla./The Benjamin School) caught three passes for 18 yards; freshman Anthony Homsey (Oakdale, Conn./Montville) added two catches for 13 yards and freshman tight end Frank Andrews (Mattapan, Mass./Philips Exeter Academy) had two receptions for 12 yards.
Junior end Alex Buzbee (Chester, N.J./Seton Hall Prep), freshman end Anthony DiTomasso (Short Hills, N.J./Seton Hall Prep), junior linebacker Chris Paulus (Manlius, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) and junior back Brian Tandy (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank Cox) were among the top defensive players.
The scrimmage on Saturday will last for approximately two hours. At halftime of the game, Kelly will announce the team captains for the 2006 season.
Georgetown opens practice for the 2006 season on August 9. The team kicks off the regular season on Saturday, September 2, hosting Holy Cross at the Multi-Sport Field.
