Washington, D.C. - Georgetown University Head Football Coach Kevin Kelly and his staff welcomed more than 100 prospective student-athletes to campus this past weekend for its annual "Prospect Day."
Spearheaded by assistant coach KiJuan Ware, approximately 135 prospective student-athletes from 19 different states visited the Hilltop. In addition to nearby residents of Maryland and Virginia, Ware said that students from high schools in Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, West Virginia and Wisconsin were in attendance.
"The objective was to give the kids a chance to see what Georgetown offers, both academically and athletically," Ware said. "We wanted the chance to show them who we were and what our program is about."
After checking in at McDonough Arena, the prospective student-athletes visited the Multi-Sport Field, the Hoyas' home field on the heart of the Georgetown campus. After visiting the facility, the group walked to Village A and Healy Hall, where they were able to see a wide view of the Washington, D.C. skyline.
Following a lunch, the group walked up to Gaston Hall to hear different speakers, where the prospective students had the opportunity to ask questions. Speakers included representatives from Georgetown's undergraduate admissions office, the athletic department's compliance and academic support offices, as well as Director of Athletics Bernard Muir, Coach Kelly, Offensive Coordinator Jim Miceli and Assistant Head Coach Rob Sgarlata.
One of the team's co-captains, senior offensive lineman Liam Grubb (Massapequa, N.Y./Chaminade) also addressed the group, talking of his experiences as a student-athlete.
After the question and answer session in Gaston Hall, the group toured other parts of campus - Red Square, Leavey Center and the bookstore - before stopping at Yates Field House, where they met with Strength & Conditioning Coach Augie Maurelli.
The day finished with each prospective student-athlete meeting with the coach who recruits their particular area of the country.
"It was a great day and we had a tremendous turnout," Kelly said afterward. "KiJuan Ware, the coaching staff and all of the people involved wanted to take the opportunity to show how we do things at Georgetown. This is our first year on campus and we were excited to show them where we are and where we're headed."
Kelly and his staff are now preparing for the team's first full practice. Patriot League Media Day will be held on Tuesday, August 1 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and the team returns in full to campus on August 7. The Hoyas will host its Media Day on Thursday, August 9.
Georgetown kicks off the 2006 season on Saturday, September 2, hosting League foe Holy Cross.
