Defending Ivy Champ Brown Downs Georgetown, 34-21

Sept. 16, 2006

Box Score

Providence, R.I. - Georgetown jumped out to a 7-0 lead on its first drive of the game, but host Brown scored 34 unanswered points en route to a 34-21 win over the Hoyas in a Division I-AA non-league football game on Saturday afternoon at Brown Stadium. The loss drops Georgetown's record to 1-2, while the Bears improve to 1-0.

Trailing 7-0 at the start of the second quarter, Brown senior running back Brandon Markey capped a seven-play, 48-yard drive over 2:29 with a three-yard scoring run to tie the game. The Bears, the defending Ivy League Champions, forced the Hoyas to punt on their next two drives and scored both times. Senior quarterback Joseph DiGiacomo engineered an 11-play, 90-yard drive over 4:24 that was capped by a seven-yard scoring pass to Lonnie Hill with 4:59 to play before the half. On Brown's final drive of the half, DiGacomo - who completed 13-of-18 passes for 176 yards in the first two quarters - threw a 17-yard pass to Colin Cloherty to cap an eight-play, 65-yard drive over 2:28, taking a 20-7 lead.

Brown scored twice in the third quarter, taking a 34-7 lead. Hoya sophomore quarterback Ben Hostetler (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) was intercepted on the third play of the half and Brown returned it to the GU 35-yard line. Seven plays later, Akin Oyalowo scored on a one-yard run for the first score. Georgetown was forced to punt on the next drive and the Bears retuned it to the 27-yard line before reserve quarterback Matt Nuzzo ran it in on the first play of the drive, making it 34-7.

The Hoyas, however, did not let up, as junior quarterback Matt Bassuener (Port Edwards, Wisc./Port Edwards), who saw action during two drives in the first half, engineered a pair of fourth quarter scoring drives. A 17-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Sidney Baker (Atlanta, Ga./Booker T. Washington) at the start of the fourth quarter narrowed the gap to 34-14 and capped a 12.-play, 87-yard drive.

The Hoyas took the ball again late in the fourth quarter and, using a no-huddle, Bassuener moved Georgetown downfield quickly. He completed three-straight passes to junior Brent Craft (Jupiter, Fla./The Benjamin School) at one point and then threw a four-yard scoring pass to sophomore Kenny Mitchell (Atlanta, Ga./Westlake), capping the eight-play, 85-yard drive that took 2:19.

After forcing the Bears to punt on the game's opening drive, the Hoyas began moving the ball immediately. Hostetler hit junior Charlie Curtis (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) for a 25-yard gain on the second play of the drive and then threw completions of six yards [junior Jasper Ihezie (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall)] and five yards (Baker) as the Hoyas moved to the 38-yard line. Hostetler threw a shovel pass to Mitchell, who broke a pair of tackles around the 35-yard line and cruised into the end zone untouched. The kick from junior Eric Bjonerud (Potomac, Md./Georgetown Prep) was good, giving the Hoyas a 7-0 lead with 9:04 to play in the quarter. The score was the first for a Georgetown team in the first quarter of a game since the 2004 season finale against Holy Cross.

The Bears took the ball over and started a drive that moved into Georgetown territory. With a chance to get a first down at the Hoya two-yard line, Brown went for it on fourth-and-inches, but the Hoya defense, led by senior co-captain Alex Buzbee (Chester, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) stopped the drive and took over on downs. Georgetown took possession on their own three-yard line, but punted and the Bears scored on the ensuing drive, the first of five-straight scores.

Bassuener finished the day completing 17-of-21 passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns, while Hostetler was 6-of-12 for 80 yards with one touchdown and one interception. The Hoyas carried the ball 25 times for 58 yards and had 292 yards in total offense, while Brown finished with 207 yards on the ground and 431 in total offense.

Georgetown is on the road again next week, visiting Columbia for its second-straight Ivy League opponent. Kickoff on Saturday, September 23 at Baker Field is slated for 12:30 p.m.
