Men's Golf Holds Season-Ending Banquet at Congressional

May 16, 2007

Bethesda, Md. - The Georgetown University men's golf team held its season-ending banquet at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md. on May 4, honoring the Hoyas for their 2006-07 season and bidding farewell to three seniors who were major factors during their collegiate career.

The day began with a round of golf at the famed Congressional Club, as senior players Matt Busa (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius), Dan Kenny (Winnetka, Ill./Northridge Prep) and Tim Moynihan (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) played with their parents, Georgetown Head Coach Tommy Hunter and club members.

The team's awards banquet was held at the country club, with Tim McBride, Georgetown Law '75 and '80, serving as the host, and Eli Farrah serving as the master of ceremonies.

Remarks were given by Kyle Ragsdale, Associate Director of Athletics for External Affairs, and Coach Hunter, who presented letters to each team member, but the night belonged to the seniors.

Busa, a Golf Coaches Association of American Scholar-Athlete the last two years, was among the top players on the team during his career. He posted a 74.58 stroke average during the year, including a seventh place finish at the Adams Cup and a top-20 showing at the Big Five Classic during the fall. During the spring, he finished in third at the Princeton Invitational, placed seventh at the LaCrosse Homes Invitational and posted a top-30 finish at the BIG EAST Championship.

He recalled an individual qualifier he played in against Moynihan during their freshman year to determine who would be the fifth team member as the Hoyas prepared for the 2004 NCAA East Regional. Moynihan, his close friend, won the qualifier, but he went to the regional on his own to be with the team. "I had a huge fire in my belly to work hard and get back there," Busa said of the NCAA Tournament. "I'll remember all of the van rides and spending time with my teammates. It's so much, it's all of the experiences we had together."

Kenny, who did not appear among the top-five players during the regular season, was one of the team's consistent contributors throughout his four years. Like Busa, he spoke in glowing terms of his experience as a Hoya golfer. "I don't want to walk away from this podium," Kenny said, "because I know that means I won't be a Georgetown golfer any more."

Moynihan was one of the steadiest players on the Hoya squad over the last four years. One of the team's co-captains with Busa, he placed seventh at The Adams Cup and posted a top-20 finish at the Big Five Classic during the fall. This spring, he placed fifth at the Princeton Invitational, posted a top-15 finish at the LaCrosse Homes invitational and finished among the top-25 at the BIG EAST Championship.

While speaking, Moynihan thanked Coach Hunter, the team's parents and the support staff for helping to make Georgetown golf something that each player, upperclassmen and underclassmen alike, would remember for the rest of their lives. "It's an amazing experience and it's hard to believe that life as a college golfer is coming to an end," Moynihan said. "The times I cherished the most were the times we spent practicing, toward becoming better players. We challenged each other to become better, better golfers and better people."

Busa and Moynihan were selected as the recipients of the team's Nick Cook Most Valuable Player Award.
