April 14, 2011

Final Stats

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's tennis squad improved to 10-8 overall and 6-2 in BIG EAST play by defeating the University of Pittsburgh Panthers, 4-2, on Wednesday afternoon at the McDonough Outdoor Tennis Complex. The squad has won seven matches in a row and will host its final home match of the season on Saturday.

Rain delayed the start of the match as the teams agreed to skip doubles play.

Sophomore Vicky Sekely started strong for the Hoyas with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 3. Graduate student Stephanie Wetmore then made it 2-0 at No. 1 with a big 6-0, 6-1 victory. At No. 5, freshman Madeline Jaeger won 6-1, 6-4, and classmate Tina Tehrani clinched the match and with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 4.

Georgetown has been hot through the month of April. GU's last loss was on March 18 at the University of Pennsylvania.

Individually, a number of players have stepped up.

Junior Lauren Greco had not lost a match since Penn going 6-0 in singles play and notching a 5-0 record in doubles before Pitt. She was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Wednesday marking the program's first weekly honor for a male or female tennis player.

Tehrani has also been solid with a nine-match singles win streak dating back to March 9 when she lost at Loyola Marymount. In doubles play, she is on a six-match win streak with Wetmore as her partner.

The Blue & Gray has played four-consecutive home matches and will host its final home match of the season on Saturday as the squad welcomes Bucknell to the McDonough Outdoor Tennis Complex. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
