Hoyas Open Football Season Against Davidson Wildcats on Saturday Night

Sept. 2, 2011

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University football team opens the 2011 season against the Davidson Wildcats on Saturday, September 3, under the lights on Multi-Sport Field at 6 p.m. The game will be the second consecutive opening matchup between the Hoyas and Wildcats, with GU winning the 2010 battle, 20-10. Georgetown is 5-3 all-time versus Davidson.

BROADCAST INFORMATION: Saturday's game will be televised locally on Verizon Fios1 with Dave McHugh providing the play-by-play and Brandon Small adding analysis. Monika Moore and Monica McNutt will be reporting from the sidelines. Fans can also view the live Hoyavision broadcast on Georgetown's official athletic website - www.guhoyas.com - with Chuck Timanus providing the call.

PRESEASON HONORS: The Hoyas had eight players named to Phil Steele's Preseason All-Patriot League team, with senior defensive end Andrew Schaetzke (Toledo, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit), cornerbacks Jayah Kaisamba (Fort Worth, Texas/LD Bell) and Jeremy Moore (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) and placekicker Brett Weiss (Phoenix, Md./Boys' Latin) all named to the first team. Moore was also named the first team kick returner. Junior linebacker Robert McCabe (Newtown Square, Pa./Malvern Prep), senior safety Wayne Heimuli (Euless, Texas/Trinity) and sophomore punter returner Zack Wilke (Boca Raton, Fla./St. Andrew's) were all named to the second team.

HOYAS PREVIEW: After a 2010 season that saw the Blue & Gray improve by four wins, Georgetown will be looking to continue to build momentum with a strong group of returning players. The Hoyas return nine starters on defense, led by Schaetzke, who led the Patriot League in tackles for loss (15.0) and finished second in sacks (10.0) during the 2010 season.

The Hoyas also return its entire starting secondary, with Kaisamba and Moore, who combined for six interceptions and 23 passes defended in 2010. At safety, the Hoyas return Heimuli and fellow senior David Quintero (Miramar, Fla./Fort Lauderdale).

On offense, the Hoyas will have two experienced quarterbacks with senior Scott Darby (Tewksbury, Mass./St. John's Prep) and junior Isaiah Kempf (Glendale, Calif./Bridgton Academy) returning. Both played during the 2010 season and will give the Hoyas stability at the game's most important position.

The Hoyas will also feature several players at skill positions with Wilke moving into the slot and senior Patrick Ryan (Westlake, Ohio/St. Ignatius) and junior Kenny Furlough (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice)starting at wide receiver. Senior Wilburn Logan (Kingston, R.I./North Kingstowne) will see time at running back with sophomores Dalen Claytor (Dunwoody, Ga./Dunwoody) and Nick Campanella (Roselle, Ill./Montini Catholic).

ABOUT DAVIDSON: The Wildcats return 53 players from a 2010 team that finished 3-8 overall and 3-5 in the Pioneer League. Included in the returning players are five that were All-Pioneer Football League selections, with Jonathan Carkhuff who was the league's Freshman Offensive Player of the Year. Similar to the 2010 Hoyas, Davidson brings a new offensive staff that has implemented the pass-heavy Air Raid offense.

Linebacker John Behm, receiver Lanny Funsten, defensive back Peter Kidwell and defensive lineman Morgan Popham were named first-team Preaseason All-Pioneer Football League by Phil Steele's College Football Preview magazine. All four earned second team All-PFL honors following the 2010 season.
