WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University football team (1-7, 0-2 Patriot League) scored early, but could not keep pace with the Colgate Raiders (3-5, 2-0) in its 34-14 loss on Saturday afternoon at Multi-Sport Field.
Sophomore quarterback Kyle Nolan (Branford, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) completed 23-of-46 passes for 256 yards with one touchdown pass and a rushing touchdown in his second start of the season. Senior wide receiver Zack Wilke (Boca Raton, Fla./St. Andrew's) led the Hoyas with eight catches for 117 yards, including a 55 yard touchdown reception on the Hoyas first offensive possession.
Junior linebacker Patrick Boyle (Wheaton, Ill./Benet Academy) had a career-high 15 tackles, while senior safety Stephen Atwater (Duluth, Ga./Peachtree Ridge) had 10 tackles and an interception for the Hoyas.
Colgate wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as Demetrius Russell capped an eight-play opening drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge. The missed extra point put the Raiders in front, 6-0 with 11:12 remaining in the first quarter.
Georgetown responded on the ensuing drive. A penalty put the Hoyas in a third down and 13 situation, but Nolan found Wilke over the middle for a 55 yard touchdown pass, GU's longest offensive play of the season. Matt MacZura's extra-point gave GU a 7-6 lead with 9:11 remaining in the first quarter. But the Hoyas would not reach the end zone again until the third quarter.
Colgate regained the lead on the following drive, as a four-yard touchdown pass from Gavin McCarney to C.J. Stempeck gave the Raiders a 13-7 lead with 6:20 left in the first quarter. A Georgetown fumble deep in Colgate territory set up the Raiders next drive, as McCarney rushed in from the 12-yard line to complete an 11 play drive to take a 20-7 lead early in the second quarter. The Raiders scored once more before the end of the half, as McCarney completed a five-yard pass to John Maddaluna to take a 27-7 lead going into the locker rooms.
Colgate missed a short field goal and Chad Coleman recovered a fumbled punt at the Colgate 46 yard line early in the third quarter, but GU was unable to take advantage until Atwater's interception inside Colgate territory.
Nolan followed with a 24-yard completion to Jake DeCicco. He then rushed down to the six-yard line to set up his own touchdown run, bringing the score to 27-14 with 2:29 left in the third quarter.
Colgate would seal the game early in the fourth quarter, as McCarney capped a nine-play drive with a four-yard touchdown pass to Maddaluna to take a 34-14 lead, the eventual final score.
Georgetown remains home at Multi-Sport Field on Saturday, November 2 when they host Lafayette College on Senior Day. The 1:05 p.m. kick-off will be the final home game of the 2013 season for Georgetown.
