Incoming Freshman Christina Parsells Wins North & South Amateur

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University incoming freshman women’s golfer Christina Parsells (Bernardsville, N.J./Kent Place) won the Junior Girls North & South Amateur at Pinehurst Country Club last week in North Carolina.

One of the top amateur events in the country, Parsells fired a 3-over par 219 to finish atop the field of 81 golfers. She opened with a 3-under par 69, struggled in the second round at 5-over par 77, but finished with a 1-over par 73 to win by one stroke.

Parsells continued her strong play on Monday, July 20, when she qualified for the United States Women’s Amateur after a qualifying event at the Mendham Golf & Tennis Club. Parsells shot a 3-over par 75 during the one-round qualifier and was one of five players who advanced to a five-way playoff for four spots. The U.S. Women’s Amateur will be held Aug. 10-16 at the Portland Golf Club in Oregon.

Parsells was named the Female Junior New Jersey Professional Golf Association (NJPGA) Player of the Year in 2013 and she was a first team all-state selection by the Star Ledger and The Record. The NJPGA also chose her to represent the organization in the Pritsch Cup and she was selected by the Future Collegians World Tour) as an honorable mention all-academic team selection. In addition, she was an honorable mention and HP Scholastic All-American Team selection by the American Junior Golf Association.

Georgetown had its most successful year in program history in 2014-15, winning a pair of tournaments and posting top-five finishes five times and placing among the top 10 seven times. The Blue & Gray won the Lady Blue Hen Invitational in the fall and their own tournament, the Hoya Invitational, during the spring. The Hoyas closed out the year with a runner-up finish at the BIG EAST Championship.
