The Georgetown University men's and women's tennis teams are in Cayce, S.C., for the 2016 BIG EAST Tennis Championships, presented by Jeep. Both the Hoya men and women earned the No. 4 seed in the tournament, a 10-team field on the women's side and an eight-team bracket for the men. The four-day tournament will be held at the Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center through Sunday, May 1, with both teams competing in the quarterfinals on Friday, April 29.
Women's Preview (Friday, April 29, 12:30 p.m., Quarterfinals: No. 4 Georgetown vs. No. 5 Marquette)
The Hoya women earned the No. 4 seed following a 12-4 campaign with a 2-3 record in BIG EAST play. The Blue & Gray face No. 5 Marquette (11-4, 3-3) in the quarterfinals of the championships. Against the same conference opponents, the two teams carry a matching record of 1-3, with each squad posting wins against Seton Hall.
The Georgetown women are coming off a hot streak that saw the Hoyas win its final two conference matches of the season, recording a decisive 7-0 decision against the Seton Hall University Pirates and a 6-0 win against the Villanova University Wildcats. The two league wins bookended a five-match win streak for the Blue & Gray, extending back to March 24.
Men's Preview (Friday, April 29, 4 p.m., Quarterfinals: No. 4 Georgetown vs. No. 5 Xavier)
The Georgetown men earned the No. 4 seed following an 11-8 season with a 3-3 mark in BIG EAST play. The Hoyas face the No. 5 Xavier University Musketeers (11-8, 3-3), a team they defeated 4-3 during the regular season. The Blue & Gray and XU each own a record of 1-1 against common opponents DePaul and Villanova.
The GU men are coming off a strong close to the season, winning five of their last seven matches dating back to March 16. Xavier is rebounding with two wins to close the regular season after a three-match skid.
