April 3, 2016 GRASONVILLE, Md. - The Georgetown University men's golf team shot a team score of 21-over par 309 to move in front of Drexel, claiming victory at the 2016 Towson Invitational on a windy day at Prospect Bay Country Club. The Hoyas carded a 29-over par 605 through 36 holes to defeat Drexel by four strokes.
Wind gusts of over 60 miles per hour delayed the start of second round play on Sunday morning, as scores rose during the final 18 holes compared to Saturday's first round, at the par-72, 6,624 yard course. GU was able to pass the Dragons and outlast the rest of the field, with three holes placing in the individual top 10.
"The conditions were brutal and I was very proud that we were the only team that had all five scores in the 70's today," Head Coach Tommy Hunter remarked. "The guys played with a lot of heart, they understood the conditions and were tough. Overall, I could not be happier for this group to get their first win together and this gives us some momentum moving forward."
Freshman Harrison Rhoades (Raleigh, N.C./Needham Brougton) turned in a 4-over par 76 to finish at 3-over par 147. His score tied with Towson's Dylan Stein for third place, two strokes behind individual champion Christopher Crawford of Drexel.
Sophomore Cole Berman (Philadelphia, Pa./The Haverford School) shot a 5-over par 77 to finish at 8-over par 152, tying teammate Kevin Jackson (Atlanta, Ga./The Marist School) for 10th place.
Sophomore Sam Madsen (Madison, Wis./Edgewood[Cardinal Gibbons]) finished tied for 19th shooting a 78, to finish at 10-over par 154. Junior Austin Rendell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) shot a 7-over par 79 in the final round to finish at 16-over par 160, tying for 43rd place.
The Hoyas return to action next weekend when they head to the Springdale Golf Club in Princeton, N.J. for the two-day Princeton Invitational. The tournament begins on Saturday, April 9 and concludes on Sunday, April 10.
