WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's tennis team defeated Bates College on Sunday by a score of 6-1. With the win the Hoyas improved to 4-9, while Bates fell to 1-7. The Blue & Gray took the doubles point with wins No. 2 and No. 3. At No. 2 Yannik Mahlangu (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley High School) and Mac Rechan (Clayton, Mo./Clayton) won by a score of 6-2, while at No.3 Jack Murphy (Coronado, Calif./La Jolla Country Day) and Ian Witmer (North Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) won 6-4.
GU continued its dominating play in singles play. Mahlangu picked up his second win of the day at No. 3 by a score of 6-1, 6-3. Rechan also went on to win a second match at No. 4, 6-1, 6-3. The Hoyas also won two other matches via straight sets. Michael Chen (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel High School) won 7-5, 6-1 at No. 2, Will Sharton (Wayland, Mass./Wayland High School) picked up a win at No. 5, 6-0, 6-1. At No. 6 Bart Paranese (Milton, Mass./Milton Academy) was trailing 4-6, 1-0 before his opponent retired.
The Hoyas return to action on Thursday, March 30 when they travel to George Mason for a match at 2 p.m.
