May 4, 2017 WASHINGTON - Georgetown University sophomore women's golfer Alexa Popowitz (Boca Raton, Fla./St. Andrew's) was named the BIG EAST Women's Golfer of the Year on Thursday as the league announced its individual awards. In addition, Georgetown was the recipient of the Coaching Staff of the Year.
The Hoyas won the program's first BIG EAST Championship on April 23 and the Blue & Gray will play in an NCAA Regional at Texas Tech starting on Monday, May 8 in Lubbock, Texas.
Popowitz was an All-BIG EAST First Team selection this year and was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year in 2016. She leads the team with a 75.07 stroke average, including a fourth place finish at the BIG EAST Championship last week. This spring, she posted four top-20 finishes, including her first collegiate victory at the Hoya Invitational.
Head Coach Katie Brophy and volunteer assistant coach John Cregan were selected as the recipients of the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year after leading the team to its first conference title. Brophy has been the head coach at Georgetown for six years and has guided the program to among the best in the league, with three runner-up finishes before breaking through this year. Under her guidance, Georgetown has had six players earn 10 All-BIG EAST honors, including six first team accolades. Three golfers ââ'¬" Eleey, Popowtiz and Jenny Xiao ââ'¬" have earned four major conference awards.
Popowitz was one of four GU golfers to earn All-BIG EAST honors in late April. Junior Jacquelyn Eleey (Quincy, Mass./Taft) and sophomore Christina Parsells (Bernardsville, N.J./Kent Place) were selected to the All-BIG EAST First Team, while freshman Ashley Fitzgibbons (Sammamish, Wash./Sammamish) was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team.
