Georgetown Football Recognized for Academic Progress Rate Numbers

July 31, 2017

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University football team was one of 14 teams from the Georgetown Athletics Department to be honored by the NCAA with Public Recognition Awards for high Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores for the 2015-16 academic year.

The Hoyas, who had 31 selections to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and two players named to the 11-member All-Academic Team following the 2015 season, were recognized for their APR scores for the third-straight year.

Along with the football team, Georgetown’s other 13 publicly recognized programs included: baseball, field hockey, men's golf, men's swimming & diving, men’s tennis, softball, women’s golf, women’s lacrosse, women’s rowing, women’s soccer, women’s swimming & diving, women’s tennis and volleyball.

It is the eighth-consecutive year that Georgetown has had at least 12 teams honored. GU's 14 teams were among a group of more than 1,200 Division I sports teams honored for their multi-year APR scores, which are given each year to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport. Georgetown’s 14 teams recognized for their performance in the classroom were the most of any team in the BIG EAST Conference.

"I'm very proud of how our student-athletes and coaches continue to demonstrate success both in the classroom and on the field of play," Georgetown Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Lee Reed said. "Student and athlete are not mutually exclusive goals at Georgetown and we remain committed to a standard of excellence in both areas. Our University community expects excellence and we expect nothing less of ourselves."

This year, 1,203 teams from 306 schools are being recognized for academic performance: 746 women’s teams and 457 men’s teams or coed teams. The total number of teams being recognized increased by 132 from a year ago, largely as a result of an increase in perfect scores. Scores for programs in the top 10 percent ranged from 984 to a perfect 1,000, with 1,090 teams earning a perfect score.

The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.

The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years.
