NEWARK, N.J. - The Georgetown University men's basketball team dropped a 74-61 decision to the No. 13/15 Seton Hall University Pirates at the Prudential Center on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Hoyas slip to 12-5 overall and a 2-4 mark in BIG EAST Conference play. The Pirates improve to 15-3 on the year and 4-1 in league play.

"We have to do a better job of not turning the ball over," Head Coach Patrick Ewing said of the game. "We got off to a great start but then we started turning the ball over and let them back in the game."

Junior forward Marcus Derrickson (Bowie, Md./Brewster Academy [N.H.]) recorded his third double-double of the season with team bests of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Derrickson led a quartet of Hoyas in double figures as junior forward Kaleb Johnson (South Hill, Va./The Carlisle School) added 14 and junior center Jessie Govan (Queens Village, N.Y./Wings Academy) and freshman guard Jahvon Blair (Brampton, Ont./Athlete Institute Prep) each tallied 11 points. Additionally, Govan grabbed five boards while tallying three assists, a game-best three blocks and one steal.

For the game, the Blue & Gray shot 36.4 percent (24-of-66) and outrebounded the Pirates, 40-38.

The Hoyas got off to a quick start as they went on a 12-3 run to open the game with all 12 points coming from the junior trio of Derrickson (6), Govan (4) and Johnson (2). It would be SHU to score eight of the next 11 points to pull within three, 14-11. The Hoyas answered right back with seven-straight points behind a Govan tip-in and a 3-pointer and layup from Blair to take a 21-11 lead with 13:19 on the clock, their largest lead of the game.

Seton Hall staged a 10-2 run to pull within two, 23-21, but a Govan 3-pointer would push the Hoyas forward again, 26-21. However, turnovers plagued GU and the Pirates managed to take the lead on a 3-pointer from Desi Rodriguez. Another trey, this time from Myles Powell, extended SHU's lead to four, 30-26, but senior guard Jonathan Mulmore (New Orleans, La./Redemption Christian [Texas]/Allegany) had the rebuttal with a 3-pointer of his own. The Hoyas again took the lead on a pull-up jumper from Blair, 31-30, with 5:31 left in the half, but that wouldn't be enough as the Hoyas went cold for the remainder of the frame. Seton Hall scored 14 unanswered points for the 44-30 advantage at the break.

Georgetown scored two quick buckets to open the second stanza to cut the deficit to single digits but an 8-1 SHU run gave the Pirates a comfortable 52-36 lead. The Hoyas continued to chip away and a layup from graduate student Trey Dickerson (Queens, N.Y./God's Academy [Texas]/South Dakota) followed by a pair of free throws from Derrickson closed the gap to 10, 60-50, with 11:04 remaining. However, a scoring drought from both teams would hold the score until a Dickerson layup with 7:54 to go in the game made it 60-52 in favor of the Pirates. The eight-point deficit was as close as GU would come as Seton Hall took the 74-61 decision at the final whistle.

Seton Hall shot 45.9 percent (28-of-61) for the game as Rodriguez and Powell led the Pirates, each tallying 19 points.

The Hoyas return to the Distrct for a three-game homestand, first hosting No. 1/1 Villanova on Wednesday, Jan. 17. Tipoff at Capital One Arena is slated for 6:30 p.m. and the game can be seen live on FS1 with Brian Custer calling the play-by-play and Bill Raftery providing color analysis. The game can be heard locally on WJFK 106.7 FM with Rich Chvotkin handling the call.
