WASHINGTON – Playing its second nationally-ranked opponent of the season, the Georgetown University volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-15) decision to visiting No. 10 Creighton in BIG EAST action on Friday. The Hoyas fall to 12-8 overall on the season and 5-3 in league play.
Alyssa Sinnette (Pearland, Texas / Dawson) led the Hoyas with a match-high 11 kills while
Iva Vujosevic (Bar, Montenegro / Niko Rolovic / UMES) added eight and
Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill. / Oak Park-River Forest) chipped in seven.
Defensively,
Kenzie Higareda (Woodbridge, Va. / Forest Park) led the Blue & Gray with 11 digs while Speech was credited with three blocks.
Georgetown claimed the initial momentum with consecutive points to open the match and held the advantage with a 6-5 lead. From there, Creighton (15-4, 7-0 BIG EAST) put together a 7-0 run to lead 12-6 and held the Hoyas at bay the rest of the frame. Speech tallied five of her kills in the stanza at remarkable .833 clip but couldn't overcome the Bluejays' .423 team hitting percentage in the set.
A back-and-forth second set saw Georgetown take an early 4-3 lead en route to a 6-6 tie behind a Sinnette kill. Creighton would then go on a 9-2 run to lead 15-8 but the Hoyas countered with a 9-3 outburst of their own to pull back within one, down 18-17. Responding in turn, the Bluejays posted a 4-1 run to go ahead 23-18 and put the frame out of reach for the Blue & Gray.
In the final set, GU won the first point and kept things close with a 9-8 Creighton advantage. The Bluejays then went on a 9-2 run to force Georgetown to use both timeouts, trailing 18-10. Although the Hoyas scored back-to-back points out of the huddle, CU used a 5-0 run to lead 23-12 and seal the victory.
Taryn Kloth and Jaali Winters led Creighton with 10 kills each. Madelyn Cole posted a double-double with 23 assists and a match-high 12 digs.
The Hoyas return to action on Saturday at home against Providence at 5 p.m. The match will serve Georgetown's Dig Pink event.
