Hoyas Defeat Longwood in Penalty Shootout

WASHINGTON– The Georgetown University field hockey team advanced to 11-6 on the season after defeating Longwood, 2-1, in a penalty shootout on Sunday afternoon. The Senior Day win concludes the non-conference schedule for the Hoyas this season. With the loss, Longwood drops to 8-6 overall.

Before the match, Georgetown honored its four seniors, Helena Masiello (East Greenbush, N.Y. / Columbia), Sam Hickey (Coatesville, Pa. / Villa Maria), Katie Maransky (Blue Bell, Pa. / Mount Saint Joseph's Academy) and Chloe Verwiel (New Hope, Pa. / New Hope-Solebury) in a senior day ceremony.

Anna Farley (Bel Air, Md. / Bel Air) notched the first goal of the game to give the Hoyas the early lead just 5:21 into the contest after putting the Lancers under pressure with two early penalty corners. Farley inserted the ball off the second Hoya corner to Maransky who set up Masiello for the shot. Farley tipped in the shot for her second goal of the season.

With just over 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Longwood equalized from a shot by Leonie Verstraete. The close range shot took a deflection off a Hoya defender and was sent past goalkeeper Ciara Weets (Springfield, Va. / Lake Braddock Secondary). After the first 35 minutes of play, the Hoyas and Lancers were deadlocked at three shots each.

Both teams exchanged scoring opportunities in the second half but the score remained tied at 1-1 after a full 70 minutes of play. After regulation, Longwood outshot Georgetown, 7-5.

In the first overtime, Cami Osborne (Newtown Square, Pa. / Academy of Notre Dame de Namur) looked to capitalize on an early chance in the second minute of the sudden victory period but Lancer goalkeeper Katie Wyman was there to make the save. On the other end of the field, Weets came up big with two saves to keep the score locked at one. After a scoreless 20 minutes of play, the game entered into the penalty shootout for the second time this week for the Hoyas.

Sydney Stephenson (Clarksville, Md. / Good Counsel) and Masiello converted in the penalty shootout to give the Hoyas the lead going into the fifth shot for the Lancers. With two saves already in the shootout, Weets denied Clara Meschini on the last shot to give the Hoyas their 11th win of the season.

The Blue & Gray is back in action on Friday, Oct. 26 as the squad hosts its last game of the 2018 campaign against No. 5 UConn. Push back is scheduled for 2 p.m. Live stats and a live stream will be available at GUHoyas.com.
