WASHINGTON – Sophomore forward
Derek Dodson (Aurora, Ill. / Waubonsie Valley ) scored a goal in the 89th minute as the No. 24 Georgetown University men's soccer team managed the 2-1 victory over the Providence College Friars ( 7-6-2, 4-2-1 BIG EAST) Wednesday evening in Rhode Island. With the victory, the Hoyas improved to 9-3-3 overall and 5-1-1 in BIG EAST Conference play to sit at second in the league with two games remaining in the regular season.
"This was a great win and really a turning point in our year," said Georgetown Head Coach
Brian Wiese. "This was a character game for our guys as we had to come back on the road against a very good team. This was a playoff-type atmosphere when the stakes were high and I was pleased with how the boys handled it."
The game winner came in the final minute of play as freshman defender
Sean O'Hearn (Mountville, Pa. / Hempfield ) sent the ball to Dodson at the top of the box. He was surrounded by Friars but took one touch before firing into the back of the net and connecting to give the Blue & Gray the victory.
The contest started with an early goal as Providence's Danny Griffin would score in just the fourth minute of action. The Hoyas would look to battle back for the remainder of the first half, but Providence managed to hold the ball and thwart Georgetown chances.
The tactic worked as the Hoyas were limited in chances and a late shot from O'Hearn was saved as the teams went into the break with the Friars leading 1-0.
Georgetown looked aggressive early in the second half and immediately searched for the equalizer. That chance came in the 70th minute from sophomore
Foster McCune (Bethesda, Md. / St. Albans School ). Junior defender
Dylan Nealis (Massapequa, N.Y. / Massapequa) took it in alone on the right side and found McCune at the far post. He managed to knock it in past keeper Colin Miller to tie the game in the 70th minute.
Neither team would look like it would get the game winner until the final 10 minutes of play as the Hoyas began to get aggressive and GU sent a number of balls into the box. In the final minute, Dodson's goal would make all the difference as the Hoyas won, 2-1, in the crucial victory.
Georgetown outshot Providence, 12-8, and took four corner kicks to PC's two. Miller was awarded the loss in the net with five saves in the contest. Georgetown keeper
Giannis Nikopolidis (Athens, Greece / Nea Genia Zirdi ) took the win despite making no saves in the game.
The Hoyas will be back in action on Saturday as the squad hosts St. John's in the home finale at 1 p.m. The game will serve as Senior Day for the Class of 2019 as well as an opportunity for the team to work with Grassroots Soccer for their annual charity game. The contest will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) with John Fanta and Tom Greaser calling the action. Live stats will be available at
