Hoyas Edge Temple, 3-2, in BIG EAST Matchup

WASHINGTON– The Georgetown University field hockey team improved to 9-3 overall and 2-2 in the BIG EAST after defeating Temple, 3-2, on Friday afternoon in Philadelphia. With the loss, Temple falls to 2-10 overall and 0-4 in the BIG EAST.

Scoring started early in Philadelphia as senior forward Jessika Daniels put the Owls on the board just 25 seconds into the match. The Hoyas were quick to retaliate and earned two penalty corners just a minute later and converted on the second. Ali Cronin (Hershey, Pa. / Hershey) inserted the ball on the play and junior forward Lindsay Getz (Northfield, Ill. / Loyola Academy) converted her shot for her seventh goal of the season. Sophomore Jax van der Veen (Exton, Pa. / The Agnes Irwin School) and junior Emily Fraser (Ballston Lake, N.Y. / Shenendehowa) were credited with the assists.

The game remained tied at 1-1 until Temple freshman Tali Popinko scored her first goal of the season in the 25th minute. Georgetown outshot Temple, 6-4, in the first half but the Temple's senior goalkeeper Chloe Johnson made four saves to give the Owls the 2-1 lead after the first 35 minutes.

The second half started off slow but after 15 minutes of play, Cronin tallied a goal of her own to tie the game, 2-2. Cronin took a penalty corner for the Hoyas just 30 seconds prior and managed to get the ball back from a pass from van der Veen. Cronin converted for her first goal of the season.

Just under two minutes later, Georgetown was awarded a penalty stroke and Fraser stepped up to the line and converted for her first goal of the match and fourth of the season. The Hoyas took the lead for the first time in the 53rd minute.

With just under six minutes left to play, Temple pulled its goalkeeper to put an extra player on the field. The GU defense held strong however and edged the Owls, 3-2, in its second BIG EAST victory of the season. The Hoyas outshot the Owls, 11-6, and freshman goalkeeper Ciara Weets (Springfield, Va. / Lake Braddock Secondary) made two saves in the contest.

The win marks the first time in more than 15 years the squad has won two BIG EAST Conference games in a season.

The Hoyas are back in action on Sunday, Oct. 7, as they take on Rutgers in New Jersey at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available for the game at GUHoyas.com.
