WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's volleyball team returned to its winning ways with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-21) sweep on the road at Butler in BIG EAST action on Friday night. The Hoyas improve to 11-7 overall, 3-2 in the BIG EAST, and their 11 wins on the season are the most for the Blue & Gray since 2011.
Alyssa Sinnette (Pearland, Texas / Dawson) led all players with 15 kills while freshmen
Elissa Barbosa (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan) and
Hannah Hamling (Warwick, N.Y. / Warwick Valley) added nine each.
Margo Pivonka (Broadview Heights, Ohio / Walsh Jesuit) paced the offense with 31 assists and nearly had a double-double with nine digs.
Defensively,
Kenzie Higareda (Woodbridge, Va. / Forest Park) led all players with 15 digs while
Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill. / Oak Park-River Forest) tallied five blocks for the Hoyas at the net.
Georgetown's offense didn't need any help in the opening frame, compiling 19 kills in the set. Sinnette tallied seven of her kills in the stanza while Hamling notched five of hers. Despite an 8-4 lead from the Hoyas, neither team could find a way to pull away early en route to a 15-15 score. A 4-0 run from Georgetown put the Blue & Gray ahead, 19-15, and the Hoyas held off their hosts down the stretch for a 25-21 set victory.
Another back-and-forth start to the second set saw ties at 7-7 and 13-13 before turning to Georgetown's favor. A 5-0 run from the Hoyas behind the strong serving of
Jessica Cusi (Pacifica, Calif. / Lick-Wilmerding) put GU up 18-13 and the Blue & saw multiple set points, up 24-20. Butler would score consecutive points to force a Georgetown timeout at 24-22, but the Hoyas closed things out coming out of the huddle to take the frame, 25-22.
An early 3-0 Butler (5-13, 2-4 BIG EAST) lead in the third quickly turned to a 6-4 Georgetown advantage to start the set. The Hoyas held the lead until the Bulldogs knotted things up at 11-11. A subsequent 6-0 outburst from GU put the Hoyas up, 17-11, but Butler wouldn't go down without a fight. Slowly chipping away at the lead, BU pulled within two late, down 23-21, but back-to-back points from Georgetown closed out the match with a 25-21 victory in the frame.
Brooke Gregory led Butler with nine kills.
The Hoyas return to action on Saturday as they close out their Midwest road swing at Xavier in BIG EAST play.
