Hoyas Sweep Butler to Wrap up 2018 Season

WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's volleyball team closed out the 2018 season with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-17) victory over visiting Butler in the season finale on Saturday evening. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 17-13 overall and 10-8 in BIG EAST play to complete the season sweep over the Bulldogs

Georgetown's 17 wins are those most in a season since the 2004 campaign and its 10 wins in league play are the most since 2001.

Alyssa Sinnette (Pearland, Texas / Dawson) led the Hoyas with 10 kills and 10 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Iva Vujosevic (Bar, Montenegro / Niko Rolovic / UMES) added 10 kills, Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill. / Oak Park-River Forest) tallied eight and Olivia King (Ardmore, Pa. / Lower Merion) chipped in six.

Margo Pivonka (Broadview Heights, Ohio / Walsh Jesuit) paced the offense with 31 assists and had a match-high three service aces.

Defensively, Kenzie Higareda (Woodbridge, Va. / Forest Park) led all players with 15 digs while Speech and Brennan Wilhite (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. / Cathedral Catholic) both had three blocks.

Georgetown opened the match with a 7-2 lead capped by back-to-back-to-back kills from Vujosevic, Speech and Sinnette. Butler began to mount a comeback, slowly chipping away at the lead knotting things up at 14-14 to force a Hoya timeout. Another 5-2 run from the Bulldogs gave the visitors a 19-16 lead as GU called its final timeout. Out of the huddle, the Blue & Gray used runs of 5-3 and 4-1 regain the lead and take the opening set 25-23.

In the second set, a tight opening to the frame saw an 8-8 tie before the Hoyas opened things up with a 6-1 run to lead 14-9. Following a Butler timeout, a 7-3 outburst gave Georgetown a 21-12 lead before closing out the set 25-15. The Hoyas outhit their guests .464 to .125 in the stanza.

An early 3-1 lead in the third set for Butler quickly turned to Georgetown's advantage behind a 6-1 run. The Hoyas pushed their lead to 14-8 to force a Bulldog timeout. Out of the break, GU kept the pressure on and taking a nine-point lead up 21-19 before claiming the final frame 25-17 on an ace from Pivonka.

Bri Lilly led Butler with nine kills.
