WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University football team had two student-athletes named to the Academic All-Patriot League Team on Wednesday. Junior quarterback
Gunther Johnson (Anthem, Ariz. / Boulder Creek / Arizona) and sophomore defensive back
Ahmad Wilson (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Gateway) were both selected for the first time in their career.
The 15-member all-academic team was selected by a vote of the league's sports information directors who could not cast a vote for their own student-athletes. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.20 cumulative grade point average, must have at least sophomore standing at his institution and must have played in at least 50 percent of the team's games.
Johnson led the GU offense in his second season on the Hilltop, finishing 152-for-295 passing for 1,696 yards and nine touchdowns with just six interceptions. He ranks in the program's top 10 for single-season passing attempts and completions. Johnson also rushed for 119 yards and a team-high four touchdowns. His 1,815 yards of total offense ranks 10th in Georgetown single season history. In the season opener at Marist, Johnson set career highs with 369 passing yards, 380 yards of total offense and four touchdowns. The passing yards ranks seventh in GU's single-game history, while the total yards is fifth.
Wilson was named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District Football Team last week and is now on the ballot for the Academic All-America Team, which will be selected later in December. On Tuesday, he was selected to the All-Patriot League Second Team, earning his second-consecutive postseason award after being named to the first team as a freshman last year. In 2018, Wilson was a force on both defense and special teams, playing in all 11 games with 10 starts at safety. He finished with 33 tackles, 1.0 TFL and was third on the team with five pass breakups. He had two memorable interceptions in 2018, including a highlight-reel grab at Lafayette and an interception in the season finale against Holy Cross where he lateraled to teammate
Ramon Lyons (Orlando, Fla. / Ocoee / West Orange), who ran it in for the defensive score.
The Hoyas finished the 2018 season with a 5-6 overall record and tied for second in the Patriot League with 4-2 mark. The four wins in league play are the most by a GU program since joining the conference in 2001. The five wins are the most since 2012.
