Govan’s 29 Pushes Hoyas Past Richmond 90-82

WASHINGTON – Senior Jessie Govan (Queens Village, N.Y. / Wings Academy) tallied 29 points and led a quartet of Hoyas in double figures as the Hoyas defeated the visiting University of Richmond Spiders 90-82 on Wednesday night. With the win, Georgetown improves to 6-1 on the season while Richmond slips to 2-5.

"Greg (Malinowski) played great," Head Coach Patrick Ewing said after the game. "He came off the bench and gave us a huge boost. Both he and Jagan (Mosely) did all the things I wanted them to do. They shared the ball, took the shots when they were open and played great defense."

Govan managed 29 points on 11-of-15 shooting, with a perfect 7-of-7 performance from the free throw line, and added a team-best nine rebounds. Freshman Mac McClung (Gate City, Va. / Gate City) was second on the team with a career-best 16 points, hitting a pair of 3-pointers along the way. Freshman James Akinjo (Oakland, Calif. / Salesian College Preparatory) tallied 13 to go with six assists on the evening while senior Greg Malinowski (Chantilly, Va. / Episcopal / William & Mary) chipped in his GU-best 10 points as he went 4 of 6 from the field and added seven rebounds. Junior Jagan Mosely (Marlboro, N.J. / St. Anthony) paced the offense with a career-best eight assists.

Both teams traded buckets to open the game, but it was a McClung dunk that brought the crowd to their feet and put the Hoyas up 8-7. A triple from Akinjo made it a two-possession game. Richmond tallied five straight points to regain the lead but seven unanswered from GU bolstered by a layup and 3-pointer from Malinowski, as well as a Govan bucket, put the Hoyas back up 21-14. Govan tallied four-consecutive points for the Hoyas from a pair of free throws and bucket.

Coming out of a timeout, the Hoya defense forced a turnover and on the other end Josh LeBlanc (Baton Rouge, La. / Madison Prep Academy) made his layup to give the Hoyas a double-digit advantage 30-20. The Spiders wouldn't go away as they strung together back-to-back layups but LeBlanc's jumper and a Govan layup pushed the lead back to 10, 34-24.

Govan continued to pour the points in but Richmond hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds of the frame to close to within five, 40-35, going into the break.

Graduate student Trey Mourning (Miami, Fla. / Ransom Everglades) got the Hoyas on the board first in the second frame as he tallied a pair of buckets to help the Blue & Gray to the 44-40 advantage. McClung drained a 3-pointer but Richmond had the retort to keep it a four-point game. A layup from Govan extended the lead back to six but another Richmond trey made it a one-possession game going into the official timeout.

Richmond came out of the huddle and the momentum swung in its direction when the Spiders managed another triple to knot the game at 54. Another McClung 3-pointer followed by a fast-break layup, also credited to the freshman, tipped the scales in favor of the Hoyas. Though the Spiders went cold from the field, they were able to pick up points at the charity stripe to match GU's efforts. Mosely's layup followed by a Govan floater gave the Hoyas the double-digit advantage once again.

The Spiders closed to six, 68-62, but a Malinowski trey ended the spurt and Malinowski's bucket just more than a minute later put the Hoyas up 11, 73-62. The Spiders found the bottom of the net again but LeBlanc's conventional three-point play gave the Blue & Gray its largest lead of the game at 12, 76-64, with 6:41 on the clock.

The Hoyas held a comfortable lead down the stretch but Richmond managed another 3-pointer to make it a two-possession game, trailing 84-78. As the Spiders resorted to foul in the final minute of regulation, the Hoyas hit 8 of 10 to secure the 90-82 victory.

Richmond's Grant Golden led the Spiders with 22 points as four were in double-figures.

The Hoyas return to action on Monday, Dec. 3 as they welcome the Liberty University Flames to the Nation's Capital to close their three-game homestand. The game will be shown live on FS2 with tipoff scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Capital One Arena. The game can be heard locally on The Team 980 with Rich Chvotkin in his 45th season calling the game.
