WASHINGTON – Sophomore Drew Carbone (Chelmsford, Mass. / Central Catholic) touched the wall in 56.46 seconds to win his preliminary heat in the 100-meter backstroke and qualify him for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials. He qualified on the third day of U.S. Winter National Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, North Carolina.
 
Carbone beat the qualifying time by .13 seconds to seal his spot at the Olympic Trials which will take place in Omaha, Nebraska in the summer of 2020. He won his heat and was the 11th-best time overall in the prelims, qualifying for the evening B final.
 
Freshman Brett Sherman (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) also qualified for a B final, doing so in the 400-meter IM. He placed seventh in his heat with a time of 4:32.63 which was good for 12th overall. In the evening final, he improved his time from the morning by more than full second, placing fifth in the B final in 4:31.54.
 
Sherman's classmate, Carlson Temple (San Diego, Calif. / Patrick Henry) also swam in the 400-meter IM, touching the wall in the prelims with a time of 4:46.23. That ranked him 24th overall and sent him into the C final, where he placed eighth in 4:46.94. Temple also swam in the 100-meter breaststroke, winning his preliminary heat with a time of 1:06.80. However, his time ranked 49th overall, missing out on the evening finals.
 
The U.S. Winter National Championships will conclude on Saturday with a pair of Hoyas in action. Carbone will return to the pool for the 200-meter backstroke before Temple competes in the 200-meter breaststroke. The morning prelims will begin at 9 a.m., with the evening finals getting underway at 5 p.m. All of the events can be watched live at usaswimming.org.
