Georgetown Opens BIG EAST Play Hosting Xavier and Butler

WASHINGTON –  The Georgetown University women's basketball team begins BIG EAST Conference play this weekend hosting the Xavier University Musketeers at 5 p.m. on Saturday and the Butler University Bulldogs at 1 p.m. on Monday.  The Hoyas are currently 6-5 on the season following nonconference play.

Both games will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) with Matt Janus and Hoya alum Monica McNutt calling the action against Xavier, and Janus and Monika Moore broadcasting the game against Butler.

Earlier this week, graduate student Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va. / Cosby) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for her performance against Rider.  In the 79-49 victory, Adomako managed 25 points tying her career best as well as eight rebounds, five steals and three assists.  It marked her second nod to the honor roll of the season and the 10th of her career on the Hilltop.  The Hoyas have had four total honor roll awards this year.

In the Rider victory, three Hoyas scored in double figures led by Adomako.  Senior guard Dionna White (Baltimore, Md. / Milford Mill) posted the double-double with 14 points and 10 boards, while graduate student Mikayla Venson (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown / Virginia) added 14 points and a pair of steals.  Junior forward Anita Kelava (Zagreb, Croatia / Croatian National Team / Maine) managed three blocks to go along with three points and five boards.

Georgetown was outrebounded by Rider 42-39.  The Hoyas shot 45.9 percent (28 for 61) from the field as well as 68.4 percent (13 for 19) from the charity stripe.  The defense forced the Broncs into 27.4 percent (17 of 62) shooting in the contest. The Blue & Gray forced 19 turnovers from Rider with nine steals in the game.

GU has three players averaging double digits as White and Adomako lead the team with 14.5 and 13.6 ppg, respectively.  Venson is third with 12.9 ppg.  White is averaging 8.5 rpg to lead the squad and Adomako is second with 7.3 rpg.  Venson has a team-best 33 assists on the season and White has 30 as well as 22 steals.  Kelava has 23 blocks to her credit to lead the league.

The squad currently holds a +1.0 rebounding margin over opponents as well as a +2.2 margin in turnovers.

Georgetown leads the BIG EAST in blocks with 5.2 bpg, and is also first in defensive rebounds with 27.5 rpg.  White ranks fifth in the league in scoring, while Adomako sits at 11th and Venson at 14th.  White is fourth in rebounding and Kelava leads the league in blocks per game.

Xavier is 9-2 on the season and coming off of a 61-45 win over New Orleans before Christmas.  Deja Ross and Lauren Wasylson combined for 26 points in the win.  Two Musketeers are averaging double figures as A'riana Gray has 13.8 ppg and Na'Teshia Owens is averaging 12.3 ppg on the year.

Georgetown is 7-6 all-time against the Musketeers and 4-1 at home. In the last meeting in the District, the Blue & Gray won 65-60 a season ago as three Hoyas scored in double figures led by White with 20 points and seven rebounds.  Venson managed 15 points and Cynthia Petke had 13.  The last meeting in the series was a 65-48 win in Cincinnati last year.

Butler is 10-1 on the season with the lone loss coming to Indiana 66-46.  The Bulldogs' last time out was a 73-63 victory over Eastern Michigan in the West Palm Invitational where the team went 2-0.  The four starters that have started every game are all averaging in double figures as Whitney Jennings leads the way with 14.5 ppg.  Tori Schickel is averaging 12.3 ppg as well as a squad-high 9.4 rpg.

The Hoyas are 5-5 all-time against the Bulldogs and 3-2 at home splitting last year's meetings.  In the matchup at McDonough, GU fell 66-57.  Petke led the way with 12 points and 10 rebounds, she was followed by White who had 11 points and DiDi Burton who managed 10 points.  In the meeting in Indianapolis, the Hoyas returned the favor with a 63-52 win as White managed 18 points and seven rebounds.
