Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Georgetown Men’s Basketball Cruises Past Howard 102-67

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team eclipsed the 100-point threshold for the second-consecutive game as the Hoyas defeated the visiting Howard University Bison 102-67 at Capital One Arena on Saturday afternoon. With the win the Hoyas close the nonconference slate with a 10-3 record.

"Everybody did something to help us win and I can't take anything away from Jessie and Josh," Head Coach Patrick Ewing said. "I don't run any plays for Josh and he still has 22 points and 11 rebounds. Jessie played great with 23 and 10, after he had two subpar games, but he came out today. It was a great game considering what we have coming up."

Senior Jessie Govan (Queens Village, N.Y. / Wings Academy) led four in double figures with 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field. He recorded his fourth double-double of the year as he chipped in 10 rebounds to go with a pair each of steals and assists. Josh LeBlanc (Baton Rouge, La. / Madison Prep Academy) added a career-high 22 points to go with a squad-best 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Jahvon Blair (Brampton, Ontario / Athlete Institute Prep) added a season-best 15 points while Kaleb Johnson (South Hill, Va. / The Carlisle School) tallied 11 points to round out those in double figures. Blair and Greg Malinowski (Chantilly, Va. / Episcopal / William & Mary) paced the offense with five assists apiece. Jamorko Pickett (Washington, D.C. / Massanuten Military Academy [Va.]) tallied a game-best three blocks on the afternoon.

Georgetown shot 52.2 percent (36-of-69) for the game and outrebounded the Bison 54-37. The GU bench outscored Howard's bench 33-7.

Despite the Bison getting off to a quick start, Georgetown worked the ball around and pulled within two, 10-8, behind a pair of layups from Jagan Mosely (Marlboro, N.J. / St. Anthony). The Blue & Gray got its first lead of the game as Malinowski drained a 3-pointer on the left side for the one-point advantage. The Hoyas continued to pour in the points and staged a 15-0 run, holding Howard scoreless for more than seven minutes of action.

Howard tried to work its way back into the game, trailing 19-12, but five-straight points from James Akinjo (Oakland, Calif. / Salesian College Preparatory), including a fast break 3-pointer, pushed GU's lead to double digits, 24-12. A LeBlanc dunk and a Govan jumper maintained the 28-16 lead.

In the final minutes of the frame, Howard strung a couple buckets together and a Bison triple cut the deficit to nine, 34-25. The Bison cut the gap to eight but Malinowski's dunk on the other end brought the crowd to its feet and brought the lead back to 10, 36-26. LeBlanc sunk a quartet of free throws to end the frame with the Hoyas leading 40-26.

Georgetown came out firing in the second half, extending the lead with a 14-5 run to open the frame. The game moved quickly as both teams started to trade buckets, including a perfect 4-for-4 effort from Govan in the opening five minutes of play.

The GU onslaught continued but the crowd came to its feet when Govan slammed back-to-back dunks to give GU the 73-41 advantage. The lead was too much for the Bison to come back from as the Hoyas used 60.0 percent shooting (21 of 35) from the field in the second half to cruise to the 102-67 victory.

Howard's RJ Cole led the Bison with 28 points. Howard (6-8) shot 33.3 percent (25 of 75) from the field.

The Hoyas return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 2 as they begin BIG EAST Conference play on the road at Butler University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Hinkle Fieldhouse and the game will be shown live on MASN2 regionally and on FSN. The game can be heard locally on WOL 1450 AM with Rich Chvotkin in his 45th season calling the game.

Notes – The last time Georgetown scored 100 points in back-to-back games was during the 1966-67 season. The Hoyas defeated Purdue 104-82 on Dec. 28, 1966 and Dartmouth 101-69 on Dec. 29, 1966. The games were part of the Kodak Classic in Rochester, New York.
