Women's Tennis Opens the Season Against Drexel and Penn

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's tennis team opened the 2018 season with a pair of matches against Drexel and Penn on Friday and Saturday in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The squad fell to both opponents, but had some solid performances to start the season off.

In Friday's match against Drexel, the Hoyas fell short 4-3. In singles, junior Risa Nagakawa (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) won her first set, 7-5, but lost the deciding set, 5-7, against Drexel's Ghita Benhadi, while senior Sara Swift (Vail, Colo./Saint Edward's School) defeated Salma Ziouti, pulling out a 6-2, 6-2 win. Junior Sydney Goodson (Great Falls, Va./Langley High School) followed with a victory with a 6-2, 6-3 win over the Dragons' Ryshena Providence. Senior Daphne de Chatellus (Tiburon, Calif./Redwood) also earned a win over Mya Fuentes. De Chatellus lost the opening set, 4-6, but rebounded with a 6-2 win in the second set and another 6-2 triumph in set three.

In doubles, Junior Lilly Lynham (Chevy Chase, Md./Holton Arms School) and senior Drew Spinosa (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) defeated Drexel's duo of Fuentes and Providence, 6-0.

Georgetown was defeated by Penn in Saturday's match, 4-3. In doubles, Nagakawa and senior Casey Marx (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) clinched doubles with a 7-6 win over Penn's OJ Singh and Jimena Rodriguez-Benito, while Lynham and Spinosa got the victory again for the Hoyas with a 6-2 win over Nicole Berkman and Ria Vaidya. Meanwhile in singles, de Chatellus earned her second win of the weekend with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Singh. Marx also won both sets against the Quakers' Berkman, 6-2, 6-2.

The Hoyas will be back in action on February 13 as the squad will play its first home match against Towson at 12:00 p.m. at Yates Field House.
