Georgetown Football Spring Update -- Special Teams

April 20, 2018

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University football team will host its annual Blue & Gray Spring Scrimmage on Friday evening, with the event getting underway at 5 p.m. The spring game, which is open to the public and free of admission, marks the culmination of a successful string of spring practices for the Hoyas.

"This has been a very exciting spring on the Hilltop," Head Coach Rob Sgarlata said. "Our number one goal in the spring was to become a more fundamentally sound football program. We also placed an emphasis on taking care of the football on offense and creating more turnovers on defense. As we head into the last week of training I feel that we built a solid foundation for the 2018 campaign."

Sgarlata begins his fifth spring at the helm of the program. Special Teams Coordinator Maurice Banks enters his second year in the position and his sixth on the GU coaching staff. He brings back Georgetown's primary punter and placekicker from a year ago, Brad Hurst (Helen, Ga./White County), but will look to restock the depth at longsnapper after the departure of Warren Wynn (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) to graduation.

Placekicking
Hurst took over as Georgetown's primary placekicker as a sophomore in 2017. He connected on five of his nine field goal attempts, including a season-long 42-yard boot in GU's season-opening win at Campbell. He was also 12-of-16 in PAT kicks. Oliver Hill (Brooklyn, N.Y./Deerfield Academy [Mass.]) got into one game as a junior and connected on his only PAT attempt at Lehigh.

One of the most consistent in the Patriot League in kickoffs, Hurst averaged 63.1 yards on 35 kicks, totaling 2,207 yards. He was the only kicker in the league to record a touchback on more than 50-percent of his kickoffs, reaching the end zone 18 out of 35 tries. The 18 touchbacks were the second most in the Patriot League.

Punting
Hurst also served as the team's punter last year, taking all but two kicks. He punted 79 times on the season, the second-most in program history and averaged 41.5 yards per kick, which ranks second in GU's single-season record book. He became just the second Hoya to surpass 3,000 yards punting. Of his 79 kicks, 10 went for at least 50 yards and he landed 17 inside the opponent's 20-yard line. In the season finale against Colgate, Hurst booted a 71-yard punt, the third-longest punt in program history. He also had a 69-yard kick in the opener at Campbell, which is good for the fifth longest.
