AUSTIN, Texas - The Georgetown University women's golf team arrived in Austin, Texas on Saturday evening and took part in Sunday's practice round as the squad gets ready for the NCAA Regional this week. The 16th-seeded Hoyas will tee off in the 18-team Austin Regional, hosted by the University of Texas, on Monday morning in the first of three rounds to be played through Wednesday.
The regional will consist of 18 holes each day, with teams beginning play at 9 a.m. ET each morning at the par-72, 6,341-yard University of Texas Golf Club. In Monday's shotgun start, the Hoyas will tee off on the 10th hole at 10:50 a.m. ET. Live scoring will be available at GUHoyas.com.
The Hoyas are the No. 16 seed among the 18 teams in the regional. Other teams competing include (by seed order): Arkansas, Texas, Michigan State, Florida, Auburn, Oklahoma, Houston, Miami, Baylor, Texas A&M, BYU, East Carolina, Texas Tech, Virginia Tech, UT-San Antonio, Houston Baptist and Missouri State.
Georgetown earned the automatic bid out of the BIG EAST when it won its second-consecutive BIG EAST Championship on April 22. The Hoyas pulled away in the final round to win by 20 strokes with a three-day score of 39-over par 903. All four scoring players finished in the top 10, led by senior Jacquelyn Eleey (Quincy, Mass./The Taft School) who fired a 1-over par 73 over the final 18 holes to win the individual title by seven strokes. She became the first player in BIG EAST women's golf history to win two individual championships as she also claimed the title as a freshman in 2015.
As a team, the Hoyas have won a program-record five tournaments this season, and have finished in the top 10 in nine of their 10 events.
Head Coach Kate Schanuel, in her first year at Georgetown, will send out the same lineup that won the 2018 BIG EAST Championship in April. Representing the Hoyas will be Eleey, juniors Pendleton Bogache (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Episcopal [Va.]), Christina Parsells (Bernardsville, N.J./Kent Place) and Alexa Popowitz (Boca Raton, Fla./St. Andrew's) as well as sophomore Ashley Fitzgibbons (Sammamish, Wash./Eastlake Senior).
Eleey was named the BIG EAST Player of the Year on Thursday, when the conference announced its postseason awards. It marks her fourth All-BIG EAST selection in four years. Eleey has played in all 30 rounds as a senior and compiled a 74.80 stroke overage. Including her title at the BIG EAST Championship, she has won three tournaments this year and turned in seven top-10 performances.
Parsells joined Eleey on the All-BIG EAST team for the third-consecutive season. The junior tied for second at last month's BIG EAST Championship, and was the individual leader heading into the final round. Parsells has played in all 30 rounds this year and is second on the squad with a 76.37 stroke average, turning in four top-10 finishes this year.
Popowitz, who joins Eleey and Parsells as the only three Hoyas to have played all 30 rounds this season, is coming off of an 11th-place finish at the BIG EAST Championship. The junior, who owns a 76.83 stroke average, has three top-10 finishes this season, including a win at the Rutgers Invitational in the fall.
Fitzgibbons has competed in 20 of 21 tournaments in her time on the Hilltop and will compete in her second NCAA Tournament in Austin. The sophomore enters play with a 78.37 stroke average and has three top-10 finishes after climbing 13 spots over the final 36 holes to place ninth at the BIG EAST Championship.
Bogache will compete in her first NCAA Tournament this week, coming off of a top-10 finish at her first BIG EAST Championship in April. She turned in a 16-over par 232 to tie for ninth with Fitzgibbons. As a junior, Bogache has a 78.17 stroke average and three top-10 finishes.
Four of the five in GU's lineup competed in last year's NCAA Tournament when the Hoyas, also playing as the 16th seed, competed at the Lubbock Regional, hosted by Texas Tech, the last time the Hoyas played in Texas. It was Georgetown's first ever NCAA appearance after winning the program's first BIG EAST Championship. The Hoyas carded a three-round score of 62-over par 926 to finish 16th of 18 teams. Popowitz was GU's top scorer with a 13-over par 229.
