WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's football team held the first of two intrasquad preseason scrimmages on Tuesday morning at Cooper Field. The Hoyas, who are preparing for the 2018 season opener at Marist College on Sept. 1, worked on various game situations with the offense taking on the defense.
The first series started at the far 35-yard line. A 38-yard run by senior running back
Carl Thomas (Floirissant, Mo./Lutheran North) set up an 18-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback
Gunther Johnson (Anthem, Ariz./Boulder Creek/Arizona) to junior wide receiver
Michael Dereus (Hyde Park, Mass/Williston Northampton).
The Hoya offense scored on its first three red zone possessions. Johnson again hooked up with Dereus for a 9-yard score on the first trip. Freshman quarterback
Lorenzo Linsey (Monticello, Ky./Wayne County) followed that up with a 23-yard touchdown pass to freshman tight end
Sergio Portobanco (Jamaica, N.Y./Episcopal [Va.]), who hauled in the acrobatic catch over a defender.
Freshman running back
Herman Moultrie III (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Academy), who had a 36-yard rushing touchdown earlier in the scrimmage called back due to a penalty, scored GU's third red zone touchdown with a strong, 19-yard rush around the left edge.
In third down situational play, Linsey connected on a 25-yard reception to classmate
Joshua Tomas (University Park, Ill./Crete-Monee).
The Georgetown defense put forth a strong effort, recording multiple sacks and coming away with three interceptions. Freshman
Micah McNeil (Olney, Md./Good Counsel), senior
Patrick Pastore (Albany, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) and sophomore
Xavier Reddick (Powder Springs, Ga./McEachern) all picked off passes.
All statistics are unofficial.
The Hoyas open the 2018 season on Saturday, Sept. 1 at Marist. Kickoff in Poughkeepsie, New York is scheduled for 1 p.m. The Blue & Gray will play its home opener at Cooper Field the following weekend, hosting Campbell on Sept. 8 for a 12:30 p.m. matchup.
