WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University field hockey team concluded its road swing on Sunday afternoon with a big 2-0 win against Appalachian State. Both teams entered the match coming off wins on Friday, but it was Georgetown who kept their perfect record alive after the weekend. The Hoyas improve to 2-0 while Appalachian State moves to 1-1 overall. Last season, the Hoyas posted an identical record after their first weekend of play, also defeating Davidson and Appalachian State. The Blue & Gray hasn't posted back-to-back shutouts since before the 2002 season.
"It was nice to finish our first weekend strong on the road," Head Coach
Christy Longacre said. "We had two really great team goals today and never stopped playing the entire 70 minutes. We still have a lot to work on going forward into our next weekend of play, but there was a lot to take away from both games this weekend to learn from and grow together moving forward".
Georgetown came out strong once again in North Carolina, scoring less than two minutes into the match on the first shot of the game. Sophomore
Jax van der Veen (Exton, Pa./The Agnes Irwin School) opened scoring with her first of the season on assist from senior captain
Helena Masiello (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia). The Blue & Gray held off the Mountaineer offense and went into the second half with App State leading 7-4 in shots while freshman goalie
Ciara Weets (Springfield, Va./Lake Braddock Secondary) was forced to make three saves.
The Hoyas had another early chance at scoring in the second half as Masiello hit a shot off the post with just under three minutes into play. However, it wasn't long until Masiello shot again, just eight minutes later, and this time put the ball in the back of the cage. It was Masiello's first of the season with assist from freshman midfielder
Halle Gill (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy). Georgetown took over in the second half, outshooting Appalachian State 5-3. Masiello and freshman
Sydney Stephenson (Bel Air, Md./Bryn Mawr School) led the team with two shots each.
This win puts Georgetown in the top of the BIG EAST standings with a perfect 2-0 record after the opening weekend, along with UConn and Old Dominion.
Georgetown is back in action on Friday, August 31, as they take on Sacred Heart in their home opener at 1 p.m. on Cooper Field, followed by Saint Francis on Sunday, September 2.
"We look forward to being home this coming weekend and are excited to play and host Sacred Heart and Saint Francis," Longacre added.
