WASHINGTON – On Friday afternoon, the Georgetown field hockey team improved its record to 3-0, defeating Sacred Heart, 2-0. Both teams entered the match with a perfect record, but it was Georgetown that kept its unbeaten streak alive. This is the third-straight shutout of the season for the Hoyas, which keeps them atop the BIG EAST standings.
Action started early once again for the Hoyas as freshman
Sydney Stephenson (Bel Air, Md. / Bryn Mawr School) scored off a penalty corner just two minutes into the game. This is the freshman's second goal of the season.
Ali Cronin (Hershey, Pa. / Hershey) inserted the pass to
Jax van der Veen (Exton, Pa. / The Agnes Irwin School), who set up the shot for Stephenson. Both Cronin and van der Veen were credited with assists on the goal.
The Blue & Gray defense held strong as the Pioneers weren't able to get a shot on frame until the 12th minute of the game. Shortly afterward, SHU had a potential opportunity on a penalty corner but sophomore
Grace English (Midlothian, Va. / Trinity Episcopal School) was there to break up the play. The Hoyas continued to keep the pressure on and put up 11 shots in the first half to Sacred Heart's seven. Goalkeeper
Ciara Weets (Springfield, Va. / Lake Braddock Secondary) made one save in the first 35 minutes of play.
The second half started in favor of the Pioneers as they were awarded seven penalty corners within the first 10 minutes of play. One of SHU's best scoring opportunities of the day started with a Sacred Heart player hitting a hard shot toward the back post for her teammate's potential tip in, but the shot went wide and the score remained 1-0. Shortly afterward, the Pioneers again had an opportunity but Weets made a highlight-worthy diving save to keep her clean sheet.
The Hoyas went on the attack minutes later as junior forward
Lindsay Getz (Northfield, Ill. / Loyola Academy) was fed a long pass for a one-on-one with the Sacred Heart goalkeeper Hailey Power. Getz made an attempt to dribble around Power, but Power made a kick save to prevent Getz's goal. The following play, sophomore forward
Cami Osborne (Newtown Square, Pa. / Academy of Notre Dame de Namur) scored her first goal of the season with a shot from the back post off a pass from Getz. The score held at 2-0 for the remainder of the game and the Hoyas continued their shutout streak. Georgetown outshot Sacred Heart ,19-16, and Weets made a total of nine saves in the contest.
Georgetown (3-0) is back in action on Sunday at Cooper Field as they take on Saint Francis (Pa.) (1-1) at noon. A live stream and live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
