Osborne Scores a Pair of Goals and GU Remains Undefeated

WASHINGTON – After Sunday's 4-2 win against Saint Francis (Pa.), the Georgetown University field hockey team improves to a 4-0 overall record. This is the first time in more than 15 years the Hoyas remain unbeaten after the first two weekends of play. Saint Francis now drops to a 1-2 record after the loss.

"I'm so excited for this team and I truly believe the sky is the limit for them, "Head Coach Christy Longacre said. "They continue to build from each game and improve and we hope to continue that through the rest of the season."

Scoring opened for the Hoyas 10 minutes into the game as sophomore forward Cami Osborne (Newtown Square, Pa. / Academy of Notre Dame de Damur) was a fed a pass across the goal from junior Lindsay Getz (Northfield, Ill. / Loyola Academy). Osborne's shot put the Blue & Gray up 1-0. Saint Francis responded with a goal of its own just seven minutes later. SFU forward Taylor Nesmith caught the Hoyas on a fast break and tied the game one all. Nesmith's goal was the first goal allowed on the season by the Hoyas.

As play continued, both teams exchanged a number of penalty corners but neither team was able to convert until Osborne scored her second goal of the day in the 30th minute. Sophomore defender Ali Cronin (Hershey, Pa. / Hershey) delivered the ball to Osborne off the corner and Osborne's shot found the back of the cage through traffic. Georgetown outshot SFU in the first half, nine to eight, and freshman goalkeeper Ciara Weets (Springfield, Va. / Lake Braddock Secondary) made four saves.

Georgetown put up a number of shots in the first 10 minutes of the second half, but it was Saint Francis who found themselves just short of the go-ahead goal in the 48th minute.  Weets made two highlight-reel worthy saves in back-to-back shots from close range to keep the score tied at one apiece. Not long after, Georgetown responded with a chance of its own as sophomore Kylee Cunningham (Whitehall, Pa. / Whitehall) converted with a goal off a deflection in front of the cage. This is Cunningham's first goal with the Hoyas.

The Blue & Gray caught momentum and picked up a fourth goal as senior captain Katie Maransky (Blue Bell, Pa. / Mount Saint Joseph's Academy) found freshman midfielder Halle Gill (Virginia Beach, Va. / Norfolk Academy) with a pass in front of the goal. Gill converted on a hard, low shot to make it 4-1. This is Gill's first goal of the season. The Red Flash scored once more before the final whistle with a tip in by Atina Pagani off of her teammates shot. The Hoyas almost doubled SFU's shots, 24-13, and penalty corners, 13-7. Weets made six saves while SFU's goalkeeper was forced to make seven.

After two weekends of play, Osborne leads the team with six points on three goals, followed by freshman Sydney Stephenson (Bel Air, Md. / Bryn Mawr School) with four points on two goals. Cronin leads the team in assists with three on the season.

Georgetown remains in the top three of the BIG EAST standings, along with No. 1 Uconn and Old Dominion. All three teams are 4-0 in the season. The Hoyas (4-0) are back in action on Friday, September 7 at 2 p.m. against LIU Brooklyn (0-4) at Cooper Field. Live stats and a live stream will be available at www.GUHoyas.com. The game will conclude the home game stretch for the squad as they travel to Philadelphia to play their first conference game against Villanova on Friday, September 14.
