WASHINGTON – Georgetown University senior libero
Kenzie Higareda (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) broke the program record for career digs as the Hoyas split their final matches of the Georgetown Classic on Saturday. The Hoyas opened the day with a 3-1 (25-14, 25-22, 15-25, 25-16) victory over George Mason before falling to UNCW 3-2 (25-10, 22-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-9) in their second five-set match in as many evenings.
Higareda tallied 34 digs on the day, including a match-high 25 against UNC Wilmington in the finale to set the mark. She now has 1,632 career digs and remains on pace to be the only Hoya to have 2,000 digs in her career.
Match 1 – Georgetown 3, George Mason 1
Olivia King (Ardmore, Pa. / Lower Merion) led all players with 15 kills in the victory over the Patriots while
Alyssa Sinnette (Pearland, Texas / Dawson) added 12.
Margo Pivonka (Broadview Heights, Ohio / Walsh Jesuit) paced the offense with 41 assists and nearly had a double-double with nine digs.
Elissa Barbosa (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan) put together another solid all-around performance with eight kills and eight digs.
Defensively,
Jessica Cusi (Pacifica, Calif. / Lick-Wilmerding) continued to show her versatility and defensive prowess with a match-high 19 digs.
Iva Vujosevic (Bar, Montenegro / Niko Rolovic / UMES) added 11 digs in just two sets of action to go with six kills.
On the service line, Pivonka and Higareda both controlled the pace of their rotations, collecting four service aces each in the match.
Bailey Williams was the only GMU player with double-figure kills, notching 11 kills to go with 11 digs for a double.
Match 2 – UNCW 3, Georgetown 2
In the nightcap, Vujosevic had a career high 28 kills to go with 15 digs for a double-double. Three other Hoyas had at least eight kills with Barbosa and Sinnette tallying nine apiece and King chiming in with eight.
Cusi also notched a double-double with 21 digs and 14 assists. Barbosa nearly had a double-double of her own with 13 digs as well.
With just 13 digs shy of the program record coming in to the match, Higareda collected four in the opening frame and another eight in the second stanza. Her record-setting dig came 13 points into the third set, digging a cross-court attack and later assisting on the winning kill of the point to give the Hoyas a 7-6 lead. That sequence, along with the elation of their teammate cementing her legacy in the record books, sparked the Hoyas to a 12-3 run which allowed the Blue & Gray to hold off a late Seahawk rally and give GU a 2-1 match lead.
Madison Peters led UNCW with 15 kills while Brynn Montgomery, Michaela White, Katie McCullough and Maddy Kline all posted double-doubles for the Seahawks.
Georgetown returns to action on Tuesday as it travels to face VCU in Richmond.
