WASHINGTON– The Georgetown University field hockey team came from behind on Sunday afternoon and scored three goals to win their sixth game of the season. With the 3-2 victory, the Hoyas improve to 6-1 while La Salle drops to 3-4.
"Today was big for us because we showed a response to Friday's game," Head Coach
Christy Longacre said. "We will fix some things this week from this past weekend as we prepare for our next conference game against Quinnipiac."
After nearly 15 minutes of scoreless play, La Salle struck first with a goal by sophomore Amber Blackshear off a penalty corner. Blackshear's shot was chipped in toward the far right post and past freshman goalkeeper
Ciara Weets (Springfield, Va. / Lake Braddock Secondary). The score would remain 1-0 until junior
Michaela Bruno (Garden City, N.Y. / Garden City) tied the game in the 32nd minute. This is Bruno's second goal of the season. In the first 35 minutes of play, the Hoyas outshot the Explorers, 4-1, and the La Salle goalkeeper was forced to make two saves.
The Hoyas came out strong in the second half and took the lead on a goal by sophomore
Cami Osborne (Newtown Square, Pa. / Acadey of Notre Dame de Namur). Osborne's fifth goal of the season was assisted by
Jax van der Veen (Exton, Pa. / The Agnes Irwin School). At the 45 minute mark, La Salle's Megan Kida was given a green card that awarded Bruno a penalty stroke, which she converted and extend the Hoyas lead to two. Bruno took two shots in the contest and converted on both. La Salle rallied late in the game and scored with less than five minutes to play to narrow the lead but the GU defense held strong and secured the 3-2 win.
The Explorers outshot the Hoyas, 11-7, but Georgetown converted three of its five shots on goal. Weets made four saves in the contest.
The Blue & Gray is back in action next week as it takes on Quinnipiac on Friday, September 21 and Brown on Sunday, September 23. The weekend will end GU's four-game road swing and the team will return to Cooper Field the following Friday, September 28 to face No. 25 Old Dominion.
