Hoyas Lose to Quinnipiac in Second BIG EAST Contest

Box Score WASHINGTON– The Georgetown University field hockey moves to 6-2 overall and 0-2 in the BIG EAST after being defeated by Quinnipiac, 2-1, on Friday afternoon. Quinnipiac moves to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in the BIG EAST.

It was a slow start in Hamden, Connecticut as the first shot of the game came from a penalty corner by the Hoyas 10 minutes into the match. Ali Cronin (Hershey, Pa. / Hershey) inserted the pass off the corner for senior captain Helena Masiello (East Greenbush, N.Y. / Columbia), who's shot crossed the goal line but was called no goal as the ball was higher than the backboard.

Junior forward Lindsay Getz (Northfield, Ill. / Loyola Academy) started the scoring 18 minutes into the match as she marched past the Bobcat defense and found the back of the cage for an unassisted goal.

Quinnipiac equalized with 12 minutes left in the half as Elisa Ruiz Martinez finished her own rebound off a Bobcat penalty corner. Marintez's initial shot was blocked but she was able to finish among the crowd in front of the cage. The game remained 1-1 after the first 35 minutes of play. Quinnipiac outshot the Hoyas in the first half 3-1 and freshman goalkeeper Ciara Weets (Springfield, Va. / Lake Braddock Secondary) made one save.

Six minutes into the second half, Weets made a diving save off a Bobcat penalty corner to keep the game tied at one. With 15 minutes left in the match Quinnipiac converted on a penalty corner to take the lead, 2-1. This time, Elisa van Winkel converted after a give-and-go play to get behind the Hoya defense.

GU had its best scoring opportunity of the second half with eight minutes left to play as sophomore midfielder Kylee Cunningham (Whitehall, Pa. / Whitehall) took the shot off a penalty corner but a Bobcat defender made a stick save at the goal line. Georgetown was unable to score in the second half and the Quinnipiac Bobcats took the win, 2-1. The Bobcats outshot the Hoyas 11-8 and Weets made three saves in the match.

The Hoyas will finish their four-game road swing on Sunday, Sept. 23 as they take on Brown at noon. Live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
