WASHINGTON– The Georgetown University field hockey team improved to 7-3 overall and 1-2 in the BIG EAST after defeating No. 16 Old Dominion, 2-1, in overtime on Friday afternoon at Cooper Field. With the loss, ODU falls to 7-3 overall and 1-2 in the BIG EAST.
"Today was our best team performance from the first whistle all the way to the last," said head coach
Christy Longacre. "They never stopped playing and believing in one another. I could not be more excited for this team and this program."
Just under two minutes into the game, junior forward
Lindsay Getz (Northfield, Ill. / Loyola Academy) buried her shot past the ODU goalkeeper at the back post. The pass was sent to Getz from sophomore forward
Cami Osborne (Newtown Square, Pa. / Academy of Notre Dame de Namur). The goal was the first shot of the game and put the Hoyas on the board with the early lead, 1-0.
Getz trails Osborne in overall team points with 12, off of five goals and two assists. Osborne leads with 14 points from six goals and two assists.
Freshman goalkeeper
Ciara Weets (Springfield, Va. / Lake Braddock Secondary) was lights out on Friday afternoon, compiling eights saves in the match, including three in the first half to keep the score at 1-0 heading into halftime. The Hoya defense also stepped up their efforts in the backfield today.
"Ciara really showed up for us today and had some game changing saves, but I also think the entire team played great team defense. And defense wins games," said Longacre.
After four minutes of play in the second half, Weets made the most crucial save of the game, making a diving stop off of a penalty stroke from ODU's leading scorer, Erin Huffman.
Weets and the GU defense held strong until the Monarchs converted on a penalty corner in the 62nd minute. After 70 minutes of play, ODU outshot the Hoyas, 18-6, and the game went into overtime at 1-1.
Just 3:44 into the first overtime period, junior midfielder
Michaela Bruno (Garden City, N.Y. / Garden City) broke away from her defender and blasted a far post shot past Old Dominion's goalkeeper. The sudden victory goal was Bruno's fourth goal of the season.
The win marks Georgetown's first BIG EAST win of the 2018 season. It is also the program's first win against an opponent ranked in the NFHCA National Coaches Poll.
The Blue & Gray is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 30 at 2 p.m. as they host Lehigh at Cooper Field. Live stats and a live stream will be available at GUHoyas.com.
