WASHINGTON– The Georgetown University field hockey team improved to 8-3 overall after defeating Lehigh, 7-1, on Sunday afternoon at Cooper Field. With the loss, Lehigh falls to 1-10 overall.
The Hoyas put up goals by five different players in Sunday's 7-1 win over Lehigh. Just over 10 minutes into the match, junior forward
Lindsay Getz (Northfield, Ill. / Loyola Academy) and sophomore forward
Cami Osborne (Newtown Square, Pa. / Academy of Notre Dame de Namur) combined for a give-and-go play which gave Osborne her first goal of the match. Shortly after, Osborne scored again, giving her eight total goals this season, off of the GU penalty corner.
Minutes before halftime, Friday's overtime goal scorer,
Michaela Bruno (Garden City, N.Y. / Garden City), scored her fifth goal of the season, making the score 3-0 Hoyas at half. After the first 35 minutes of play, Georgetown outshot Lehigh, 6-2, and freshman goalkeeper
Ciara Weets (Springfield, Va. / Lake Braddock Secondary) was forced to make two saves.
After two minutes of play into the second half, junior back
Emily Fraser (Ballston Lake, N.Y. / Shenendehowa) converted her shot off the penalty corner. Senior forward
Helena Masiello (East Greenbush, N.Y. / Columbia) tallied her second assist of the season on the play.
Lehigh earned its lone goal of the game with 22 minutes remaining as Olivia Perrone found the back of the cage off one of the Mountain Hawks' five penalty corners of the match.
The Blue & Gray earned a penalty corner of their own minutes later and Fraser converted for her second goal of the game. Fraser was assisted by sophomore midfielder
Jax van der Veen (Exton, Pa. / The Agnes Irwin School) and sophomore back,
Ali Cronin (Hershey, Pa. / Hershey). Cronin leads the team in the assists category, with six.
Just 14 seconds after Frasher's goal, Getz netted a goal of her own to put the Hoyas up, 6-1, with 15 minutes remaining in the match.
Senior captain
Katie Maransky (Blue Bell, Pa. / Mount Saint Joseph's Academy) finished off the scoring for the evening with a put-in at the back post off the pass from Bruno. It was Maransky's first goal of her senior season.
After the weekend's results, Osborne leads the team in overall points with 18, off of eight goals and two assists. Getz trails with 15 points from six goals and three assists.
The Hoyas are back in action on Friday, Oct. 5, as they take on Temple in their last string of away matches for the season.
