WASHINGTON – Three Georgetown University football players earned Patriot League weekly honors on Monday, recognizing their performances Saturday in GU's 39-14 season-opening victory at Marist. Senior defensive back
Blaise Brown (New Orleans, La. / St. Augustine / Loomis Chaffee) was named defensive player of the week, while junior placekicker
Brad Hurst (Helen, Ga. / White County) earned special teams player of the week honors and freshman wide receiver
Joshua Tomas (University Park, Ill. / Crete-Monee) took home rookie of the week. Additionally, junior quarterback
Gunther Johnson (Anthem, Ariz. / Boulder Creek / Arizona) was an honorable mention selection.
Brown led the defense with two interceptions, 1.5 tackles-for-loss and 0.5 sacks. He recorded interceptions on third down pass attempts on each of Marist's first two drives, the first of which led to a Georgetown field goal. In the third quarter, he also got a hit on the Marist quarterback, forcing an errant throw that led to a third GU interception. Brown and the Hoya defense did not allow a point until midway through the third quarter.
Hurst accounted for nine points on Saturday, going 4-for-4 in PAT attempts and connecting on his first field goal of the season from 23 yards. He also caught a two-point conversion attempt, making a diving catch with a defender draped all over him to give the Hoyas an 11-0 lead in the first quarter. Hurst had four touchbacks on seven kickoffs and landed 2-of-3 punts inside the Marist 20-yard line. On one kickoff attempt, Hurst was the lone Hoya back and slowed down the returner enough to prevent a touchdown.
In his first career game, Tomas caught four passes for 39 yards and a touchdown. He caught a 22-yard pass early in the game to give the Hoyas a key first down, before capping the scoring in the fourth quarter with a four-yard touchdown reception. Tomas also returned three kickoff for 66 yards, averaging 22 yards per return. As the holder on extra points, he passed for a two-point conversion on a trick play after Georgetown's first touchdown.
Johnson finished 26-of-37, passing for 369 yards and four touchdowns. He completed passes to 10 different receivers, and four different players had receiving touchdowns. His 369 yards through the air are the seventh most in school history and he GU's first 300-yard passer since 2015. Johnson also rushed for 11 yards, giving him 380 total yards of offense, the fourth most in Georgetown single-game history.
These are the first career weekly awards for Brown, Hurst and Tomas. It is the second career honorable mention selection for Johnson
The Hoyas (1-0) will host Campbell University on Saturday, September 8 at Cooper Field for the home opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Live stats and a video stream, via the Patriot League Network, will be available at GUHoyas.com.
