QUEENS, N.Y. – The Georgetown women's basketball team lost a close one to the St. John's University Red Storm (9-10, 2-6 BIG EAST) 59-51 on Friday evening at Carnesecca Arena in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the loss the Hoyas drop to 9-10 overall and 3-5 in league play.
"There was no consistency, no effort tonight," said Georgetown Head Coach
James Howard. "If we can find consistency, and toughness by boxing out and doing the little things we can change the outcome of these games. It's tough right now, but we need to find a way to get better and get ready for Seton Hall on Sunday."
Senior guard
Brianna Jones (Babylon, N.Y. / North Babylon / Louisville) led the way with a career-high 14 points. She was joined in double figures by graduate student guard
Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va. / Cosby) who had 12 points and seven rebounds. Senior guard
Dionna White (Baltimore, Md. / Milford Mill) scored nine points and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds to go along with three assists and three steals.
The Hoyas outrebounded the Red Storm 38-36, but committed 14 turnovers to St. John's nine. Georgetown shot 35 percent (18 for 51) from the field while allowing 36 percent (22 of 61) from SJU.
St. John's opened the game with an 11-2 run before a steal and layup from Adomako could slow the momentum. That sparked an 8-0 run to cut the lead to one 11-10 in the final two minutes of the first quarter. The Red Storm managed a bucket, but a 3-pointer by Jones tied the game at 13. A late layup from SJU made it 15-13 at the end of the first period.
Jones began the second with a pair of free throws and another from White put the Blue & Gray ahead 16-15. St. John's came up with some stops to regain the lead as Georgetown would continue to stay within a possession or two. A trey from Adomako cut it to one with a minute to go in the half as 24-23 would stand at the break.
The Red Storm converted a three-point play to begin the second half as White answered with a layup as she fell to the ground. A 6-2 run forced a Hoya timeout as Georgetown tried to stop the momentum as SJU looked to pull away with the 33-27 advantage. A trey by St. John's would give the squad an eight-point lead 38-30.
Looking at another eight-point deficit, Adomako drove to the basket and then White dished to graduate student
Mikayla Venson (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown / Virginia) for the jumper to cut it to four forcing an SJU timout. Free throws helped GU down the stretch as the squad trailed 45-39 at the end of the third.
Georgetown struggled to score early in the final stanza as St. John's built the lead to 12. An Adomako steal and layup regained the momentum, and Jones added an acrobatic layup. The defense began coming up with some stops and a layup from freshman guard
Nikola Kovacikova (Levice, Slovakia / UKF Nitra) cut the lead to four with three minutes remaining in the game.
In the final two minutes, Hoya fouls put the Red Storm at the line and Georgetown was unable to find an answer eventually falling 59-51.
The Hoyas will make the short trip to South Orange, N.J. on Sunday for a 1 p.m. matchup with the Seton Hall University Pirates at Walsh Gymnasium. The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network and live stats will be available at
