SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Georgetown women's basketball team came back from a 17-point deficit, but could not find the answer falling to the Seton Hall University Pirates (13-7, 5-4 BIG EAST) 76-63 on Sunday afternoon at Walsh Gymnasium in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the loss the Hoyas drop to 9-11 overall and 3-6 in league play.
"They fought to come back and showed intensity, but we didn't have that sense of urgency for the entire game," said Georgetown Head Coach
James Howard. "We fought, but we need to continue to do all of the little things to come all the way back and get the win."
Three Hoyas scored in double figures as graduate student guard
Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va. / Cosby) led the way with 21 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double. She also had five blocks and two steals. Graduate student
Mikayla Venson (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown / Virginia) added 18 points and three steals, while senior guard
Dionna White (Baltimore, Md. / Milford Mill) scored 13 points to go along with seven assists and three steals.
The teams tied in rebounds with 36 apiece, but GU committed 22 turnovers to Seton Hall's 17. Georgetown shot 40 percent (21 for 52) from the field while allowing 37 percent (23 of 62) from SHU.
Venson opened the game with a 3-pointer and a jumper, but the Pirates immediately matched with a pair of triples to take the 6-5 lead in a sloppy back-and-forth beginning. The defense continued to force SHU turnovers, but couldn't capitalize on the other end of the floor. Adomako cut the lead two one 10-9 on a pair of free throws, but a late 3-pointer by Shadeen Samuels made it a four-point game to end the first period.
The Pirates began the second with a trey, but it was White who hit from long range on the next possession. SHU hit three quick triples, but the Blue & Gray would not go away quietly as senior guard
Brianna Jones (Babylon, N.Y. / North Babylon / Louisville) and junior forward
Anita Kelava (Zagreb, Croatia / Croatian National Team / Maine) partnered to score six points making it 27-20 midway through the second.
Free throws from White kept the Hoyas close as the Pirates continued to rain threes. Georgetown wouldn't be able to keep pace not scoring a field goal in the final four minutes of the half to make it 36-26 in favor of Seton Hall at the half.
Seton Hall began the third quarter with another three and a layup but a combination of junior guard
Morgan Smith (Upper Marlboro, Md. / Riverdale Baptist) and Venson matched the output. As the Hoyas struggled from the floor, the Pirates managed to build the lead moving ahead by as much as 17, 48-31 midway through the third.
Georgetown wouldn't go away quietly manufacturing a 13-0 run sparked by a layup from Venson and back-to-back 3-pointers from Adomako which cut the lead to four 48-44. It would remain a four-point game at the end of the third as the momentum had swung back to the Blue & Gray with Georgetown trailing just 52-48.
The Pirates began the fourth with a 9-1 run extending the lead back to 12. Both teams continued to hit from beyond the arc, and every time Georgetown would make a small run it seemed SHU sank a trey. In the end, the comeback would never be complete as GU fell 76-63.
Georgetown will be back in action next weekend as the squad hosts the Creighton University Bluejays on Friday at 7 p.m., and the Providence College Friars on Sunday at 2 p.m. Friday's contest will be broadcast live on FS2, and Sunday will be carried on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
