PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Georgetown University women's basketball team downed the Providence College Friars (8-7, 0-3 BIG EAST) 68-52 Friday evening at Alumni Hall. The Hoyas rode a 13-0 run to begin the fourth quarter to victory to improve to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in BIG EAST Conference play.
"We were good defensively in the fourth quarter and then we hit some shots," said Georgetown Head Coach
James Howard. "
Dorothy Adomako came on and
Dionna White came on and when we're playing that way we're hard to beat."
Two Hoyas scored in double figures led by senior guard
Dionna White (Baltimore, Md. / Milford Mill) who had 24 points and eight boards, while adding two steals. Graduate student
Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va. / Cosby) managed 20 points and 12 rebounds for her 14th double-double of her career. Of the 11 Hoyas who played, eight scored in the balanced attack.
Georgetown outrebounded Providence 40-30. The Hoyas shot 43.8 percent (28 for 64) from the field as well as 53.3 percent (8 for 15) from the charity stripe. The defense forced the Friars into 34.0 percent (16 of 47) shooting in the contest. The Blue & Gray forced 18 turnovers from PC with eight steals in the game.
Providence opened the scoring with a pair of free throws and a bucket, but Adomako answered with five quick points to take the lead. Both squads went cold until another shot from the senior make it 7-4. Back-to-back scores from the Friars gave PC the advantage, but out of the media timeout a free throw by
Morgan Smith (Upper Marlboro, Md. / Riverdale Baptist) tied the game at eight. Freshman guard
Nikola Kovacikova (Levice, Slovakia / UKF Nitra) nailed the kick-out trey and White maneuvered down low for the layup to make it 13-9 as GU managed the 6-0 run. In the final seconds the Friars banked in a 3-pointer to tie the game at 13 at the end of the first quarter.
Providence hit a trey and two free throws to begin the second quarter, Georgetown came back with an 11-1 run including nine points from White to put the Blue & Gray on top 24-19. The Friars weren't done with a 5-0 run of their own to tie it up at 24. A layup from freshman guard
Shanniah Wright (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Polytechnic Preparatory Day School) in traffic and a jumper at the free throw line from graduate student
Mikayla Venson (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown / Virginia) was followed by a late Friar bucket to make it 28-26 in favor of the Hoyas at the break.
The Friars began the second half with three-consecutive 3-pointers. On the other end, Venson converted the three-point play as well as a pair of free throws and Adomako knocked down a trey as the Blue & Gray clung to the one-point lead 36-35. Providence came back with a 7-0 run before Venson could drive the lane for a layup to slow the momentum.
In the final two minutes, the Hoya defense stood strong and White managed five quick points on a pair of drives to tie the game at 43. Following a huge defensive stop by junior forward
Anita Kelava (Zagreb, Croatia / Croatian National Team / Maine), White split the defense again. Providence hit a pair of free throws late as the game was tied at 45 to end the third period.
White continued her dominance in the fourth with a layup off of the opening possession and senior
Brianna Jones (Babylon, N.Y. / North Babylon / Louisville) added a trey as GU had the momentum. An Adomako jumper made it 52-45 and forced a Providence timeout. The scoring kept coming with contributions from Kelava and Adoamko as it was a 13-0 run to begin the final stanza.
From that point on, GU never looked back outscoring the Friars 23-7 in the final stanza for the 68-52 victory.
