Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 12 Hoyas Blank Pirates

WASHINGTON – The No. 12 Georgetown University men's soccer team used a pair of unassisted goals from senior Achara to down the Seton Hall University Pirates 2-0 on Friday afternoon at Shaw Field.  With the win, the Hoyas improved to 9-1-1 on the season and 3-0-1 in BIG EAST Conference play, while Seton Hall dropped to 5-5 on the year and 2-2 in league matches.

Sounds of the Game
  • "It was a really important game today.  BIG EAST games are difficult to get a result and, with us playing at home, it was nice to get the first goal, get the second goal and get ready for Monday." - Achara

How it Happened
  • It was an uneventful first half as Georgetown had seven shots but only one dangerous look. In the 20th minute, junior Jacob Montes had a solid chance that was saved by Pirate keeper Andreas Nota.
  • The Hoyas outshot the Pirates 7-1 in the first half and each keeper had one save apiece.  Georgetown held the first-half advantage in corner kicks 5-3.
  • Freshman Will Sands was active starting the second half as his header forced Nota to make a diving save at the left post.
  • The Hoyas put one on the board in the 50th minute as a shot by Jack Beer was saved by Nota, but the rebound went to Achara who sent it back in for the goal.
  • Minutes later, Achara and freshman Dante Polvara had chances as Nota was again forced to make a huge save.
  • On the other end, a shot to the far post was stopped by sophomore GU keeper Giannis Nikopolidis.
  • In the 60th minute, a Pirate was assessed a red card following a hard challenge resulting in the Hoyas playing a man up for the remainder of the game.
  • In the final minute of action, a keeper clear was intercepted by Achara who scored on the open net to give the Hoyas the 2-0 victory.

Of Note
  • The Hoyas outshot the Pirates 26-4 with 10 shots on goal to The Hall's two.
  • Georgetown held the 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Nikopolidis picked up his second-straight clean sheet with two saves on the afternoon, while Nota managed eight saves in the game.

The Hoyas will close out nonconference play on Monday as the squad makes the short trip to College Park to take on the No. 25 Maryland Terrapins at 7 p.m. at Ludwig Field. The game will be broadcast live on FS1 with Dean Linke and Chris Doran calling the action.  Live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
