COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 12 Georgetown University men's soccer team made it three in a row Monday evening picking up the 1-0 victory over crosstown rival Maryland in College Park. A second half goal improved the Hoyas to 10-1-1 on the year, while the No. 25 Terps fell to 6-4-2 on the season.
Sounds of the Game
- "Our team has been really good all season of having different guys be match winners for us and this goal is a good example of two reserves that were key. We have a real belief in guys who come on and we use our depth." – Head Coach Brian Wiese
- "This is a really great fixture for me, it's one of the best fixtures in college soccer, even on a Monday night there is a lot of juice and energy to it. If we could play this on a Saturday or Friday night the place would be full." – Wiese
- "We always try to break out in numbers whenever we get the ball deep in our end, so when we completed the first two passes and we had three people on the far side, I just felt that if I kept my width and kept up with the play that if we got a cross in, and Paul played a great cross in that got through, all I had to do was put it in." – Derek Dodson
How it Happened
- The first chance of the game was Maryland's as GU freshman goalkeeper Tomas Romero pushed the ball over the crossbar. Moments later, the Hoyas had an opportunity on a corner kick as Daniel Wu's shot went high.
- With 15 minutes remaining in the first half, Jacob Montes hit from the top of the box but his shot was wide.
- Georgetown came out firing in the second half as Jack Beer had a head of steam but his shot was blocked by the Terp defense.
- On the other end, UMD's best chance of the match to that point went just high.
- Achara came down and shot from the top corner of the box forcing a save from keeper Niklas Neumann.
- In the 61st minute, a shot from the left side by freshman Will Sands was cleared off the line by Matt Di Rosa prompting a video review to confirm it did not cross the goal line.
- The goal came in the 65th minute as a move from Zach Riviere broke it open at midfield. He found Paul Rothrock on the left side who crossed it in before Achara redirected the ball to Dodson who buried it to make it 1-0.
- Both teams searched for the second of the match as Romero came up with a big save and the Hoya offense was buzzing.
Of Note
- Georgetown outshot Maryland 16-5 and held a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.
- Romero had two saves in the win to get the shutout, Neumann had four saves and took the loss as the Terp defense was credited with a pair of saves.
- This was Georgetown's fourth-straight shutout and the seventh of the season.
- The game was GU's final nonconference match of the season as the Hoyas were 7-1-0 in out-of-league action.
- The Hoyas' record of 10-1-1 ties the 2012 season for best start in program history.
