Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 13 Hoyas Blank Musketeers 1-0

WASHINGTON – The No. 13 Georgetown University men's soccer team downed the Xavier University Musketeers 1-0 on Saturday in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Shaw Field.  With the win, the Hoyas improved to 11-1-1 on the season and 4-0-1 in league play, while the Musketeers fell to 5-6-1 overall and 1-4 in the BIG EAST.

Sounds of the Game
  • "Honestly (the goal) was pure luck, I was in the right spot in the right time.  JB (Fischer) had a really good hit, the goalie made a nice save and I was there so got the hit." – Jacob Montes
  • "Today was kind of just enough.  Xavier is always a really tough opponent for us, they match up in a way that makes it hard for us and I thought our guys fundamentally did a good job over 90 minutes minimizing their strengths.  They're great on setpieces, we didn't concede a single corner.  The ability to get the first goal today was hugely important.  While I would have liked two or three, with this team at the moment, one is all you need." – Head Coach Brian Wiese

How it Happened
  • The Hoyas were buzzing early as GU managed four dangerous shots in the first 10 that were wide or saved.
  • In the 14th minute, the Blue & Gray found the back of the net as a cross was sent in from Ethan Lochner.  The ball came out to JB Fischer whose shot was saved by XU keeper Matthew Rosenberg.  The rebound fell to the foot of Jacob Montes who confidently sent it back in to make it 1-0 for his sixth on the season.
  • With 15 minutes remaining in the first half, Zach Riviere had an open header hit the post, but the Hoyas would go into the break with the 1-0 lead.
  • Xavier had chances in the second as GU keeper Giannis Nikopolidis was forced to come up with one big save.
  • Midway through the second, the Hoyas were pressuring with chances from captains Dylan Nealis and Derek Dodson.
  • Xavier's Rosenberg continued to make stops as the Blue & Gray attacked in waves.
  • In the final minute, Georgetown cleared a late chance to hold on for the 1-0 win.

Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Xavier 24-7 (12-4 SOG) and held a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Nikopolidis had four saves in the win to get the shutout, Rosenberg tallied 10 saves and took the loss as the Musketeer defense was credited with one save.
  • This was Georgetown's fifth-straight shutout and the eighth of the season.
