Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 7 Georgetown Shuts Out No. 4 St. John’s 3-0

JAMAICA, N.Y. – The No. 7 Georgetown University men's soccer team used a big first-half effort to blank the No. 4 St. John's University Red Storm 3-0 on Wednesday in a first place BIG EAST Conference showdown at Belson Stadium. With the victory, Georgetown improved to 12-1-1 on the season and 5-0-1 in league play, while the Red Storm fell to 12-2 for the year and 5-1 in league play snapping a five-match shutout streak.

Sounds of the Game
  • "To come here and win, for me, this is one of the hardest venues to do that so I thought we were really good tonight.  We knew we had to be sharp and the guys approached it in a way where they knew that this was going to feel like and NCAA Tournament game and they had to be good.  We came in and were able to play how we like to play and to do it here was pretty special." – Head Coach Brian Wiese

How it Happened
  • The Hoyas dominated possession throughout the first half as the midfield managed to disrupt every Red Storm attack.
  • Georgetown got on the board in the 23rd minute as Jacob Montes had a free kick from just outside the box, which he hooked in over the wall to the top corner of the net to make it 1-0.
  • Less than a minute later, a quick give-and-go from Dylan Nealis and Derek Dodson resulted in Nealis burying the goal to put the Blue & Gray ahead by two.
  • Early in the second half, freshman goalkeeper Tomas Romero was forced to come up with a pair of big saves facing his first tests of the evening.
  • Georgetown added a third goal off of a setpiece in the 52nd minute.  A header from Sean O'Hearn gave Achara the shot which was saved.  The rebound went to Dodson who connected it in the open net to make it 3-0.

Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot St. John's 14-7 (9-4 SOG) and held a 9-6 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Romero had four saves in the win to get the shutout. The SJU keepers tallied six saves and took the loss.
  • This was Georgetown's sixth-straight shutout and the ninth of the season.
  • The Hoyas are now 2-1 against Top 25 opponents this year.
