Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 7 Hoyas Blank Marquette 3-0

WASHINGTON – The No. 7 Georgetown University men's soccer team scored early in a 3-0 shutout of the Marquette University Golden Eagles Saturday afternoon on Senior Day in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Shaw Field.  With the victory, Georgetown clinched one of the top two seeds in the BIG EAST Championship as well as moving to 13-1-1 on the season and 6-0-1 in league play. The Golden Eagles now fall to 7-7-1 for the year and 3-4 in league play.

Sounds of the Game
  • "This game, coming out of St. John's and beating such a highly-ranked team, Coach just emphasized always staying focused and making sure we get the job done no matter who we play." – Jacob Montes
  • "We're super confident in the back right now.  No matter who it is behind us, Giannis (Nikopolidis) or Tomas (Romero), we feel confidence in both of them.  We're going on a hot streak right now and it was great to get Siggi (Geirsson) and (Austin) Riddick in on senior day." – Dylan Nealis
  • "This Marquette team is a really good team, they have a lot of really talented players and we worry about complacency setting in.  This group, to their credit, hasn't had a single match all year where we haven't come out with the intent to play well.  This is starting to become what the team is.  They show up and they've got to play and perform." – Head Coach Brian Wiese

How it Happened
  • The first goal of the game came in the 17th minute on some fancy footwork from Jacob Montes.  The junior dribbled through the defense, but before he could fire, an MU defender cleared it into his own net to make it 1-0.
  • Just two minutes later, senior Dylan Nealis was taken down in the box resulting in the Achara penalty kick to give the Blue & Gray the 2-0 advantage.
  • Another chance in the first half came off of the foot of Jack Beer whose shot from distance clanged off of the crossbar.
  • The three players combined for GU's third goal of the game as Montes started a run in the middle of the pitch passing to Achara.  The senior passed across the face of the goal to Dodson who connected at the far post to make it 3-0 in the 55th minute.
  • The Hoyas controlled possession for most of the game as Zach Riviere had some solid looks including one that hit the cross bar.

Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Marquette 17-7 (8-3 SOG) and held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Giannis Nikopolidis managed three saves in the win as he and Ethan Koehler combined to get the shutout. Cedrik Stern tallied five saves and took the loss for Marquette.
  • This was Georgetown's seventh-straight shutout and the 10th of the season.
