WASHINGTON – The No. 3 Georgetown University men's soccer team won the program's sixth BIG EAST Regular Season Championship with a 2-0 shutout of the Villanova University Wildcats Saturday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup in Villanova, Pennsylvania. With the victory, Georgetown improved to 14-1-1 on the season and 7-0-1 in league play. The Wildcats fell to 8-8-1 for the year and 1-6-1 in league play.
Sounds of the Game
- "It wasn't our prettiest performance of the year, but it was a hard, scrappy game and I was happy to see our ability to come through in a game where we have to manage physicality well. I'm just thrilled for our program and our seniors. To win another BIG EAST Championship, especially with the league as good as it is this year, it's really satisfying." – Head Coach Brian Wiese
How it Happened
- Both teams had chances early with each keeper making saves.
- The game changed in the 27th minute as Sean Zawadzki was taken down in the box resulting in a penalty kick. Derek Dodson lined up and buried it to make it 1-0.
- Minutes later, Dodson had another chance as keeper Carson Williams came out and the ball was headed over to the junior who had a chance on the open net. Carson Williams made a dive on the line to stop it and keep it a one-goal game.
- GU's freshman goalkeeper Tomas Romero was tested more in this game than previous contests as he was forced to come up with a few big stops.
- The Blue & Gray got the insurance goal in the 73rd minute on a counter. Dodson went to Montes who sent it to Achara for the shot. His effort was saved off of the line by a Wildcat defender, but the rebound went back to Montes who put it right back in to make it 2-0.
Of Note
- Georgetown outshot Villanova 22-8 (11-4 SOG) and held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
- Romero managed four saves in the win and his sixth shutout of the year. Williams tallied nine saves and took the loss for Villanova.
- This was Georgetown's eighth-straight shutout and the 11th of the season.
- Georgetown has now won at least a share of the sixth BIG EAST regular season titles in program history.
